Give reasons why some people are choosing to become vegetarian.
The consumption of meat and fish products has long been challenged on moral grounds. While the enormous suffering that a non-vegetarian diet imposes on animals has caused many people to abstain from eating meat, concerns about individuals’ health and global warming have also played a role in the growing appeal of vegetarianism.
The risk of various health problems is one important reason for some people to turn to a meat-free diet. The consumption of meat, especially in high amounts, is associated with the risk of numerous health issues. Diabetes, obesity and heart conditions, as well as different forms of cancer, might become more likely as a result of meat consumption. People are making changes in their dietary habits to avoid any potential risks. Since all the essential nutrients found in animals, such as carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins, occur naturally in fruits and vegetables, a well-balanced diet still seems possible without meat.
Another important factor for turning to vegetarianism can be the threat of global warming. Farm animals are known to cause a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Therefore, wide media coverage of the dangers of global warming and the impact of greenhouse gases, along with the subsequent calls from different activist groups have persuaded many to change their diet. Such people are trying to reduce their individual carbon footprint and thereby help to fight against rising temperatures.
In conclusion, the increasing popularity of a vegetarian diet can be explained by the rising awareness of the public about the potentially harmful effects of eating meat. Whereas for some its implications on health play a more important role, others are choosing to become vegetarians to make their contributions to stop global warming.
