How to improve concentration during your IELTS exam
There are many things you can try to improve your concentration and focus. Note that like with any other skill, you need consistent practice to get better at concentrating. Here are a few suggestions:
1️⃣Exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and get enough sleep, as these can all contribute to better cognitive function. I’d even say that if doing your homework means that you will get like 3-4 hours of sleep only, just don’t do the homework. Instead, get some quality sleep, so that your mind doesn’t wander during the lesson the next day*
2️⃣Take regular breaks to give your brain a chance to rest and recharge. Even during the exam, you’ll have a chance to do so between different sections. Once you finish the listening part, for example, there is no need to further exhaust your mind thinking about your answers, instead just try to give yourself some time to relax.
3️⃣Practice mindfulness or meditation to improve your ability to focus and be present in the moment.
Again, you should do this not only right before your exam, but build this habit.
4️⃣ Find a comfortable and quiet study space. You’ll also find it useful to minimize distractions, such as turning off your phone.
5️⃣ Stay hydrated during the exam. You don’t want to drink a lot of water for obvious reasons 🤷🏻♂️, but taking a sip of water every now and then can be helpful.
6️⃣ Try some breathing exercises or meditation to calm your mind before the exam. This was particularly useful before my first speaking exam. I felt quite nervous and couldn’t stop thinking about a ton of different things until I did some meditation while waiting for the examiner to invite me to his room.
*this does not mean that you should play video games all day long and go to the lesson unprepared 👎😤🙅♂️
