1️⃣ Using a comma after ‘because’ and ‘that’s
It is clear that there is no comma after the word ‘that’. ✅
Students put a comma after ‘that’ because their grammar is terrible. ✅
2️⃣ Paraphrasing every single word in the question
Not all words have good synonyms. In fact, most words don’t. I am seeing some candidates change the word “roads and transport” to “vehicles and transport”, which is a big mistake here. Don’t paraphrase words like children, people, and schools, because you can’t.
3️⃣ Not using the obvious verbs
Another very annoying problem is when students use words like “X stood at” or “X made up” when they can use far better, natural verbs given in the question. For example, instead of saying “Italy began at 22%” or “Italy’s spending was 22%”, you should definitely try saying,
“In 1990, Italy spent / allocated 22% of its budget …” ✅
“In 2006, nearly 80% of English men and women watched TV in their free time, …” ✅
4️⃣ The next problem relates to overusing cohesive devices such as “To begin with” or “However”. You shouldn’t start every single sentence with a cohesive device, or else you’re gonna get a very low score for CC. If you read my sample essays, I only use 1 maybe 2 cohesive devices in a whole body paragraph, half of which are tucked away in the middle of the sentence. (I got 9.0 for my CC.)
P.S. The list can be longer, but I have a place to go. Wait for the post about the common mistakes made in the reports/essays written by candidates who took the mock test yesterday at our center.
