TOPIC: People decide to have their first child when they are older. What are the reasons? Do you think advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Delaying parenthood has become common for people. While there are several reasons behind this phenomenon, I firmly believe that its disadvantages are far more significant than the advantages.
The first reason why people want to have their first child later is related to people’s concerns with personal development. Having a child means having parental responsibilities such as being a good role model for the child. Therefore, some people may prefer to focus on self-improvement and reaching the needed emotional maturity before becoming parents.
Another reason behind delayed parenthood is the willingness to secure financial stability, delaying childbirth for a few years. Raising children usually requires parents to have a sufficient amount of money to meet the needs of their offspring. This can be particularly relevant to today’s society, where more and more parents want their children to study at private kindergartens and schools afterward. For example, the monthly expenditure people spend is about $1300 in the UK per child, which can make up a substantial part of an average monthly income.
Despite people’s good intentions, the disadvantages of delaying parenthood can far outweigh the advantages, leading to severe health risks for women. Our physical well-being usually deteriorates as we age, which is a universal rule for the human body. Hence, if we take the fact that childbearing itself is also a risky process into account, giving birth in their older ages can pose even more severe consequences for the woman, which could even be life-threatening. This is the reason why I think that the drawbacks of postponed parenthood can be consequential for women.
In conclusion, a number of reasons can explain why the trend of delayed parenthood is taking place, and the main reasons are correlated with preparing for the role of parents and achieving better financial footing before having the first child. However, it should be noted that this trend is largely negative because it can put women’s health at risk and even end up with their death.
