Let me share a band 8.0 essay I wrote today:
Some people say children should have organized free time activities. Others say that children should be free to choose what they do in their free time.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Effective parenting techniques include engaging children in useful activities outside their school hours. The choice of such extracurricular activities, some argue, should be left to children themselves as this approach fosters a sense of independence and contributes to the discovery of hidden talents. However, I believe parental guidance is critical in monitoring children`s downtime to ensure an effective usage of time and resources.
The proponents of children having autonomy in their free time point to a heightened sense of independence among children. In other words, children who take responsibility for their actions realize they face consequences for their wrongdoings such as fighting or squandering their valuable time on unimportant tasks. More than fostering time management skills, children can learn to solve their problems on their own, advancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Moreover, when children have leeway in their leisure time, they can pursue their passions and interests, which might ultimately lead them to building a foundation for their professional careers.
However, most children are naïve and lack self-control and self-restriction, potentially leading them to threats. Once left unattended, they are likely to develop addiction to computer games or spend an excessive amount of time playing with peers outside. This, at best, might lead to behavioral issues and, at worst, causes health concerns such obesity due to excessive screen time. Children are also at risk of falling behind their peers who might progress achieve better academic attainment given more attention is paid to studies.
I believe, a balanced approach can be generally useful in raising well-rounded individuals. Parents possess a better understanding of the world around children and are more experienced, while children can recognize what areas they are passionate about. By combining both perspectives, free time should be divided equally to important skills acquisition lessons and to enjoyable playful activities. In this way, children retain the opportunity to realize their potential in the fields that interests them and make an effort to obtain skills applicable to the real world. For example, a child might attend private tutoring class, whilst enjoying the rest of his free time learning robotics.
In conclusion, there are certain merits of granting children full control of their leisure time, such as individual decision-making skills and the pursuit of individual interests; however, this should be combined with parental supervision of their free time since children only satisfy their needs but also learn valuable skills. If left to their own devices, children are likely to waste their time and struggle to excel academically.
