If you're struggling to land your first cybersecurity job, you're probably applying the wrong way.

Submitting resumés to public job postings means that you're competing with 100+ other applicants, most of them will look exactly like you on paper.

Even having a cybersecurity degree might only put you in the top half of candidates, and that's usually not enough to get hired.

So - here's my (potentially controversial) advice. Make them notice you before the job is even posted.

- Be unforgettable. Follow industry leaders, attend local meetups, engage in conversations, and create content that showcases your skills.

- Show your value. Build hacking tools, write blog posts, contribute to open-source projects. Demonstrate that you are hardworking, intelligent and resourceful.

- Target companies strategically. Instead of mass applying, identify companies/people you admire and find ways to help them. Providing value to the right people can open doors faster than any resumé.

Don't beg for a job (it demonstrates low value), and don't spam people (it will only annoy them). Just make yourself stand out, so when they are hiring, you're the obvious choice.
