🇺🇿🇰🇿Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have taken different but complementary paths to improve their connectivity with Pakistan
🇰🇿Kazakhstan has embedded itself in institutionalized structures such as the Middle Corridor. In this context, it has also sought to conform to trans-Eurasian logistics designed to integrate South Asian trade routes into established infrastructure regimes.
🇺🇿Uzbekistan, by contrast, alienated from World Bank-supported corridors, has adopted a more adaptive and tactical approach, promoting alternative linkages such as the Termez-Karachi transport corridor and the Trans-Afghan Railway.
🇺🇿Thus, a few days ago, the prospect of developing the Termez-Karachi transport corridor was discussed at a meeting with the Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Pakistan. The possibility of creating an advanced logistics terminal in Termez with the assistance of the National Logistics Corporation of Pakistan was studied.
🇰🇿In turn, in August 2024, representatives of Kazakhstan and Pakistan agreed to extend the TAC route to northeast Kazakhstan to create the Trans-Afghan Multimodal Transport Corridor: multimodal because goods would arrive from Kazakhstan at the Termez terminus in Uzbekistan by truck for transshipment by rail to ports in Pakistan. From there, they can reach a wide range of countries from Southeast Asia to South Asia and the Middle East.
🇺🇿By prioritizing pragmatic agreements between countries, Uzbekistan seeks to circumvent the bureaucratic and financial obstacles posed by large institutional structures. In an attempt to increase its flexibility, it instead relies on targeted investments and partnerships to create independent transit routes linking it to global markets.
🇰🇿Kazakhstan's strategy, by contrast, is to build itself into multilateral transportation agreements with international backing. This strategy is consistent with China's BRI program.
