The tables demonstrate data on the intake and production of potatoes in five different regions of the world in the year 2006.
Overall, Europe showed by far the largest consumption rates per person, with a significant margin compared with the second largest consumer, North America. However, Africa exhibited the lowest quantities of consumption. In terms of production, Asia and Europe were the leading potato growers, but the figures for the remaining regions were not nearly as high, with Central and South America having the lowest quantities.
The consumption of this vegetable was highest in Europe, where 96.1kg was eaten by a person on average, followed distantly by North America with around 38kg less. Ranking third and fourth, Asia and the studied parts of Americas consumed almost identical amounts of 25.8 and 23.6 kilograms. By contrast, Africa was the area with the lowest quantity, with only 14.1kg, which is approximately 7 times lower than that for the leading region.
The production of potatoes was topped by Asia with a whopping 131.2 million tons, which was around 5 tons more than the amount for Europe. The tonnage for remaining regions, however, were nowhere near: North America harvested just under 25 million tons, and the other two did so with an average of 15 million tons.
