Official Letter to the U.S. Embassy:
Dear U.S. Embassy Representatives,
On behalf of the citizens of Uzbekistan who strive for freedom and human rights, we express our gratitude for your support of democratic values and freedom of speech around the world.
We would like to draw your attention to concerns about the situation of repression and control of freedom of expression in Uzbekistan. In particular, one of the independent news channels, “Turkiston Ittifoqi,” faces threats and harassment from the Uzbek government, including the use of modern technologies for surveillance and cyberattacks.
Safar Bekjon Urganji, the leader of this movement, continues to fight for the liberation of his people from external and internal pressure, but in response to his efforts, the authorities use tools such as the Pegasus surveillance program, as well as trolling and hacking attacks to suppress his voice and suppress democratic movements in the country.
We ask that you address these human rights violations and support our commitment to free expression and independent media in Uzbekistan.
We ask that you:
1. Ensure international attention to the events taking place in Uzbekistan.
2. Support the use of legal mechanisms to protect freedom of speech and combat abuses against activists and journalists.
3. Provide safe channels of expression and information for citizens of Uzbekistan who are subject to threats and repression.
We believe that freedom of speech and democracy are the foundation of peace and stability. We call on the U.S. Embassy to support those who fight for these values and help protect the rights of citizens of Uzbekistan.
Sincerely,
Representatives of civil society in Uzbekistan, supporters of Turkiston Ittifoqi and human rights
