Some people believe that university students should pay all the costs of studies because university education only benefits students themselves, not society as a whole.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Education plays an essential role in one’s success in life. In this regard, some suggest that university students should be required to cover all expenses related to their studies since society does not benefit from university education. I do not entirely agree with this suggestion.
The idea that university education merely benefits the individual is valid to some degree. The main personal benefit is having better future prospects. That is, having acquired a university diploma, one stands better chances of entering the job market. Being employed is essential to making a living, providing for one’s family, and ultimately building a financially-secure future. Universities help enhance one’s job prospects in another way. Universities are public venues where people can build a network of friends and acquaintances, who might help them land a job through referrals. Clearly, personal benefits from university education are varied.
I, however, would argue that the advantages of university education extend beyond the individual. The primary benefit to society is having skilled workforce. This is because a country needs educated workers to improve its knowledge-based industries such as science, technology, banking, medicine and many more. Were it not for universities, these sectors of the economy would suffer, and society could possibly collapse. A nation can also grow wealthier with more university graduates. To be precise, more university graduates often means more tax-paying citizens, which will eventually help build funds available to the nation. This money, in turn, can be used to improve other areas such as healthcare and transportation.
In conclusion, though the idea that all university costs should be footed by the individual student is acceptable for few reasons, I am of the opinion that such expenses should partially be paid for by the government as university education benefits the society in the form of skilled labor and more taxpayers.
