Individual greed and selfishness have been the basis of modern society. Some people think that we must return to older more traditional values such as respect for the family and the local community in order to create a better world to live in.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Our modern life is characterized by people seeking self-interest and material wealth. While I agree that some traditional values should be reintroduced to our society to improve lives, I maintain that our tendency to act selfishly has been paramount in most of our achievements as a species.
On the one hand, it is hard to deny that we owe many of our successes to the very greed and selfishness that are often seen in a negative light. When people seek self-interest, it does not necessarily mean that others will suffer. In fact, this can help to improve people’s lives as a result. For instance, when a self-centered entrepreneur sets up a new factory in a certain neighborhood, they might not be driven by noble causes. Perhaps they are simply aiming to make a profit. However, their actions will usually benefit the community at the same time, where people can find jobs more easily. Another by-product is the benefit to consumers, who can now find their needed products more easily.
Nevertheless, this obsession with our own desires might not be healthy. One obvious problem is its negative effect on our relationships with the members of our family and community. When people only think about their own benefit, they usually stop communicating and helping others around them, and they become more isolated. While this might prevent them from receiving help in difficult situations, it will also damage their mental health. As a social species, humans need emotional support from their close ones, but our current lifestyle does not fulfill this demand. As a result, many people today struggle with loneliness and depression worldwide despite their success in various other domains. Therefore, traditional values teaching people the importance of the family and the community could help to fight such problems.
In conclusion, our strong desire to do things that benefit us does not have to be a bad thing. However, adhering to traditional values that stress the role of family and community will help us make the world a better place to live by improving our mental health and satisfying our emotional needs.
