Being a celebrity – such as a famous film star or sports personality – brings problems as well as benefits.
Do you think that being a celebrity has more benefits or more problems?
When people rise to stardom in the world of sports or entertainment, their fame comes with certain advantages and downsides. In my opinion, the personal costs that these famous people have to pay far outweigh any financial benefits they can gain.
Admittedly, celebrities enjoy a great deal of wealth. An extravagant lifestyle, multi-million mansions and lavish cars are some examples of things this wealth can buy. Not only do these stars make millions of dollars from their professions, but they also frequently use their influence to generate other streams of income. While some of them choose to endorse a certain brand or a product in advertisements, others launch their businesses. Thanks to a large loyal fanbase, most such enterprises are usually a financial success. A clear example of this is the whisky brand “Proper Twelve” owned by a former mixed martial arts world champion, Conor McGregor. This brand managed to gain a sizeable market share soon after its launch not because of its particularly high quality or competitive price, but mainly for its association with the sports star. Clearly, fame can bring significant wealth to people.
However, this wealth comes with a huge cost to private life. First, these well-known people do not enjoy much privacy. Virtually all aspects of their lives are in the limelight and closely watched by the media. They can hardly enjoy a simple walk or go to a coffee shop due to the paparazzi constantly following them, not to mention family arguments or extramarital affairs that make the headlines. In addition, celebrities frequently have to deal with various rumors and unfound allegations. The recent trial between two stars of Hollywood, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, clearly illustrated how fame can add more stress to these people's already difficult phases of life. While the court hearings were continuing, the media and the public never stopped blaming and judging either one of them, mostly putting forward claims with little evidence to support them. Hence, being famous significantly limits one’s freedom and challenges them with various unjustified claims.
In conclusion, achieving fame has both positive and negative aspects. In my opinion, the financial well-being that most famous people enjoy cannot make up for the lack of privacy and the constant rumors and accusations they have to face.
