There is today a pertinent debate over whether young minds had better pursue their interests or adopt a more pragmatic approach when launching on a career path. While the latter suggestion can make sense on some grounds, I take the side of those who stand for the former one.
Proponents of prioritizing the long-term viability over job satisfaction argue that passion-driven careers often fail to offer job security and financial stability. For example, those with a passion for arts usually earn less than those in fields like engineering and medicine. Given the pace at which technology is advancing, this is not surprising to see that demand for certain professions such as mechanical engineering is booming. This relevance of particular jobs makes them more secure to choose, offering monetary advantages and more employment prospects.
Nevertheless, my stand aligns with those who give career fulfilment a top priority. Despite individuals in more relevant jobs earning much money, they are also bound to back down in the face of setbacks if they do not have predilection for their jobs. By contrast, those following their interests can still have a financially prosperous job as they often experience higher levels of motivation and commitment, which can drive people to overcome obstacles and work tirelessly in their jobs. Consider the case of Steve Jobs, who dropped out of school to follow his true calling and eventually founded Apple. This example clearly underlies the importance of passion towards one’s career,demonstrating financial gains followed by job satisfaction. In addition, when one follows their passion in selecting a job, they are also less likely to suffer from work-related stress, improving their overall well-being.
To conclude, it might appear to be more secure and lucrative to adopt more practical and realistic approach in choosing a job, but I believe that the significance of job fulfilment overshadows any other motives as it can contribute to people’s long-term career success.
