If you ask me, there are
two easiest processes in language acquisition:
Explaining something and
Understanding something. That is, if somebody is good at explaining some grammatical structures to you, that wouldn’t make them great teachers. I have so far observed some so-called instructors at an approximate level of B1-B2 who were flattered and kissed up by their students as if they were the Gods of language. Now ask yourself that if they really knew all those nuances in the language in the same way accomplished teachers do, wouldn’t have they proved their level in action simply by rocking any test they prepare students for. After all, even my not competent enough students can teach what they have learned in class to their little siblings explaining everything in depth. Okay, you may still cast doubt on what I say arguing that you are fine with your teacher not having adequate level as long as they are good at explaining something. That now leads me to the next point of my message: the second easiest thing with language learning.
Yes, you read me right. I assure you that understanding something is the easiest of all in language learning. Unlike math or physics where one’s success mainly lies in grasping all those distant theories and concepts, language learning should primarily revolve around practice and feedback on your mistakes rather than theory. Here is more clear-cut analogy: if we consider a language learner as a new-born baby, one can only learn crawling with theoritical knowledge but needs practice and more tailored approach to learn walking. To take my stand further, just take a look at your last essay and see how many mistakes you have made with “to be”, “tenses”, or all other nuances of grammar, say, the difference between “although” and “despite”. But haven’t you been told about them by your teacher? Why do you then still keep making the same errors? I admit that understanding those grammar rules is important but a real and marked growth goes far beyond this. And you don’t need a Cambridge expert to bring those concepts within your grasp, but you will need a true professional to make you authentically acquire the language you are learning.
In short, the outcomes, accomplishments and results make someone a successful language learner or teacher not short-term satisfactions over understanding or explaining something. Not every student starting off a long journey of language learning makes it till the end even though they were pretty good at understanding things at the beginning. Have the right mindset and rise all the way to top!
