🇺🇸The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is facing significant organizational changes under the current administration
USAID will soon lose its status as an independent agency and will be absorbed into the U.S. State Department. The move is part of the “America First” policy. The administration has already taken steps such as removing USAID's website and putting many employees on administrative leave (simply put, fired).
Donald Trump plans to drastically reduce USAID's staff, from over 10,000 to 294 employees.
At the moment, there is a freeze on most programs, and major operations have been halted (including in Central Asia).
USAID, becoming part of the State Department, will lose its operational independence and will be deprived of the opportunity to work freely with non-governmental organizations and conduct long-term projects.
At the moment, this organization brings only losses without bringing the expected results. As an example, USAID's program to promote the rights and integration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Central Asia. The “Being LGBT in Asia” initiative was not focused exclusively on Central Asia, but it represented USAID's efforts to strengthen basic LGBT rights throughout Asia, including countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. What came out of it is well known to everyone.
In the short term, once the organization is taken over by the U.S. Department of State, a massive purge will begin. A large number of investigations against the company's employees should be expected. There will also be a policy of stricter controls on misuse of funds. This implies stricter vetting processes and closer cooperation with other agencies such as the Department of Defense.
The liquidation of USAID as an independent agency and mass layoffs with further litigation does not mean that major projects and ideas will cease to be sponsored and implemented. In the long run, projects and programs will be revised and will continue to exist with a more rigorous form of accountability to the US leadership.
