📱 How Will the US Bitcoin Reserve Work, Exactly?

Bloomberg reports that with a March 6 executive order, President Donald Trump created a strategic Bitcoin reserve, effectively entrenching Bitcoin’s legitimacy as a mainstream financial instrument.

📄With the same executive order, Trump also created a government stockpile for all other digital coins the government holds. The long-awaited moves didn’t result in investor euphoria, however: the price of Bitcoin and most other tokens dropped sharply after the executive order.

📊Bitcoin isn’t issued by a government, proponents say a strategic reserve could act as a hedge against instability in the traditional financial system, such as dramatic drops in the value of the US dollar. Trump’s artificial intelligence and crypto “czar” David Sacks also noted Bitcoin’s huge appreciation over the years, implying the reserve would create value for the country.

📉The exact amount of US government holdings is unclear, but according to the blockchain analytics provider Arkham, the government owns about 198,000 Bitcoin, as well as a slew of other coins, including Ether and USDT. The company estimates the total value of all US government crypto holdings is more than $16 billion. Bitcoin accounts for the majority of that sum, at about $15.8 billion.

🇨🇳What Is Japanification and Is it Happening to China
[long read]

Bloomberg reports that some economists see China in danger of sliding into the same kind of multi-decade struggle against deflation and dismal growth that Japan suffered in the 1990s and 2000s.

📊Economist Richard Koo says China is now facing the same kind of “balance sheet recession.” After years of supplying easy credit to the property market, Beijing’s move in 2020 to curb real-estate related debt prompted home prices and construction to plunge, and the after-effects of that are still being felt.

📉Outside the property sector, China’s industrial firms are continuing to borrow at a double-digit pace, assisted by government support for key sectors. China now has about a third of the world’s manufacturing capacity and many rapidly growing companies, especially in new technology.

📊China is now experiencing its longest period of deflation this century, as indicated by the contraction in the GDP deflator. The trend is expected to continue. Even in sectors that appear to be doing well such as autos, many companies can only sell by providing steep discounts.

💬The lesson from Japan is that “the government has to do the opposite of the private sector to keep the economy going,” the economist Koo said.

🌎 To Save the Planet, We Must Sacrifice Some of It
[long read]

Bloomberg reports that attempts to preserve the natural world might feel noble, but they’re stifling our chance of a decarbonized future.

📊Under a strictly utilitarian way of thinking, a plowed and fertilized field of soybeans is more useful to humans than the rainforest that was cut down to make way for it. However mangrove forests, for example, are one of the most effective defenses against coastal flooding and storm surges, preventing about $1.5 billion in damage to Florida counties.

🌳Planting trees removes CO2 from the atmosphere at a cost of about $40 per metric ton, well below the $71-per-ton cost of European carbon credits and the $500 to $1,000-per-ton price tag for mechanical CO2 removal, a still largely hypothetical technology.

📉A 2005 UN study made clear that global warming will soon be the single biggest contributor to biodiversity loss, as ecosystems are destroyed faster than they’re able to recover. At 1.3C of warming from pre-industrial temperatures — where we’re at today — about 1.6% of all species will be driven into extinction, according to an analysis in Science . At 2.7C — where we’re headed even if all countries match their climate pledges — that rises to 5%. In a hopefully unlikely scenario where we hit 4.3C, 15% of species are gone.

💻 Three Novel Approaches That Can Revolutionize Batteries

Bloomberg reports that new technologies relying on materials such as chicken feathers and food waste can help cut the environmental footprint of energy storage.

📈The rapid expansion of energy storage infrastructure has a cost. The global electric vehicle boom has resulted in a lithium supply shortage since 2022 despite the 180% increase in production compared to 2017. The pressure of mining more minerals for batteries has also threatened some of the world’s largest, most diverse and fragile natural ecosystems.

🪶Conventional membranes — a fuel cell component that enables chemical reactions to generate electricity — are composed of a polymer backbone that contains perfluorochemicals ("forever chemicals"). Chicken feathers are 90% keratin, a fibrous protein that can be extracted and converted into a biodegradable membrane that serves as a “drop-in” solution in hydrogen fuel cell production.

To reduce batteries’ reliance on graphite, a group of Australian researchers have created a new anode material by coupling food acids with metal particles such as iron. With feedstocks for the new anode material available from industrial waste, it will allow battery to store twice as much energy as the conventional one and could potentially reduce the overall environmental footprint of EV batteries.

🇺🇸At a Northwestern University laboratory in the US, scientists have engineered a new type of molecule that can self-assemble in water. The final outcome, according to the scientists, is a novel material that could be charged just like a battery.

🛢 The ‘Oil Grand Bargain’ Isn’t Mere Fantasy

Bloomberg reports that thinking the unthinkable is useful, especially when the global oil market’s three kings are involved.

📊The US today by far is the world’s largest petroleum producer, pumping nearly as much as Saudi Arabia and Russia combined. Ultra-low oil prices could be as bad for the country economically as sky-high prices.

📉As a percentage of US GDP, the oil sector has the largest share in 35 years, according to World Bank estimates. The US, Saudi Arabia and Russia may not benefit from very low oil prices — say, $50 a barrel and less, like those witnessed during the depths of the pandemic. But I don’t think the three agree on what a “reasonable” price is.

📈The American oil industry can make good money at just $70 a barrel, even if it won’t encourage production growth a lot. Even at $60, most American oil companies can prosper. When Trump posted on social media about his desire for lower oil prices, benchmark Brent crude was hovering around $78.

🇨🇳Xi Just Got the Chance He’s Been Waiting For

Bloomberg reports that Beijing is positioning itself as the global grown-up, while the US disrupts decades of stable foreign policy.

📊Soon after Trump doubled tariffs on China to 20% Tuesday, Beijing retaliated with 15% duties on American food and agricultural products, including chicken, cotton, soybeans, beef, and fruits. Xi’s move was viewed as measured, and left him with a host of other options still to use.

📉This puts the Chinese leader in a position of relative strength as he heads into the country’s most important political gathering this week. The National People’s Congress is expected to unveil plans to revive the economy, hit the anticipated annual growth target of around 5% as well as boost consumption — all the while facing down the challenge of Trump’s tariffs.

📊To do that, the world’s second-largest economy may also have to look overseas to expand. Historically, China has done this via commerce — it now contributes 30% of global growth, and is the major trading partner of over 150 countries.

🍫Wild Cocoa Markets Push Europe’s Historic Chocolatiers to the Brink

Bloomberg reports that poor harvests in West Africa have driven the price of cocoa to record highs, forcing heritage confectionary brands out of business.

🇪🇺Europe is responsible for about half of global cocoa bean imports, which help fuel its $50 billion chocolate market. Switzerland and Germany consume more than 20 pounds (9.1 kilograms) of chocolate per person per year. Most of that is imported from West Africa, where harsh weather and virulent crop diseases have hit harvests hard.

📊In the 2023-24 season, the market experienced a supply deficit of 478,000 metric tons, the largest shortfall since at least the 1980s, according to estimates from the International Cocoa Association. That spurred cocoa prices to nearly triple last year, surging to just shy of $13,000 a ton, putting enormous pressure on some of the biggest chocolate and food makers.

📉Hershey and Mondelez International Inc., two of the biggest bulk chocolate producers, said last week at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference that consumers will need to adjust to a new normal where chocolate is 40-50% more costly than it used to be.
