Manipulation at Its Finest As Ramadan was approaching, I’ve been thinking about cutting down my screen time and focusing more on the
spiritual and academic aspects of my life.
I came across
this post, which caught my attention regarding how
social media platforms manipulate their users.
Then, I watched
The Social Dilemma—a Netflix documentary that exposes what really happens
behind the curtain of social media.
Here are some of my key takeaways:
- The long-term goal of social media platforms is not just selling ads. It’s about shaping your behavior, influencing your thoughts, and even redefining who you are.
- You’re not just “failing” at quitting social media: you’re up against thousands of engineers and data analysts whose job is to keep you hooked.
- Every tap, scroll, and second you spend looking at the screen is tracked, analyzed, and used to create a profile of you—so they can feed you content you can’t resist.
What To Do:
- Delete the apps.
- Turn off notifications
- Use privacy-focused browsers that don’t track your search history (e.g., Qwant).
One part really hit me:
Former executives of these tech companies don’t let their own kids use social media until a certain age. Let that sink in.
Have you watched
The Social Dilemma? What are your thoughts?
