Nowadays weddings are getting bigger and expensive.
What are the reasons for this?
Is it positive or negative development?
Current weddings are becoming bigger and unaffordable. Although there are some rational reasons behind this trend, I am of the opinion that it is a change for the worse.
There are several reasons why people try to celebrate their weddings extravagantly. One of them is social pressure: as a large number of people become wealthier, they spend generous amounts of money on a single party, and others follow suit, irrespective of their financial background. Take, for example, people in my country; many move abroad, particularly to Russia, to make a living, and they end up spending almost all of their hard-earned money on a single day. Even if it seems ridiculous, they do so thinking, “I should make my wedding at least bigger than my friend’s.” This, in turn, adversely affects their finances, eventually putting them under a significant amount of debt. Another reason is the desire for uniqueness. Couples aim for trendy elements to stand out. For instance, they tend to hire luxury cars, drones for photography, and even fireworks to make their big day memorable. These efforts contribute to fulfilling the wishes of young couples, but they also significantly increase costs.
Despite the arguments mentioned above, the celebration of gigantic and costly weddings can be disadvantageous to some extent. Hosting such extravagant events can cause an enormous financial burden for those from low-income families. This is because, in order to afford an immense wedding, people often spend a large part of their lives working in foreign countries to save enough money. In my country, this is a common scenario. As a consequence, they not only sacrifice important years of their lives but also waste their precious time on fleeting displays of extravagance.
In conclusion, while people are eager to host extravagant weddings due to societal expectations and the desire for uniqueness, I believe this trend is mostly wasteful and unnecessary.
