Overall, agriculture is the biggest water consumer in all regions except North America and Europe where most water is used for industrial reasons, while relatively less water is consumed by households worldwide.

Significant proportions of water is used for farming practices globally, with Central Asia using 88% of its water for agriculture, followed closely by Africa at 84% and South East Asia at 81%. While South America spends 71% for this purpose, the figures are lower for North America (39%) and Europe (32%).

Industry is a major water consumer in Europe and North America, using 53% and 48%, while the figures for all other regions are centered loosely around 10%. The figures for domestic water use range from a high of 19% in South America to a low of 7% in Central and Southeast Asia, with Europe(15%), North America(13%), and Africa(9%) in between.

Overall, spending on insurance, furniture/equipment and teachers’ salaries increased in percentages at the expense of a decline in the proportion spent on resources and other staff’s pay. The remuneration for teaching staff accounted for the biggest expenditure across the period and the opposite was true for insurance.

In 1981, 40% of school spending went for salaries for teachers, followed by salaries for other staff at 28% while resources and furniture required 15% each. By contrast, insurance accounted for a mere 2%.

By 1991, the figure for teachers’ salaries had increased to 50%, but in the final year it decreased to 45%, still remaining the most important expenditure. That for furniture and equipment, however, declined to 5% in 1991 before recovering to 23% in 2001 as the second biggest spending, while insurance saw its figures rise to 3% in 1991 and 8% in 2001 though it made up the smallest numbers in all years.

Other workers’ salaries, once the second most important expenditure, declined by 6 and 7 percentage points every ten years, hitting 15% in 2001, whereas the spending on resources rose to 20% in 1991 but halved in 2001, accounting for 9% of the school’s total annual spending.
