Some companies promote competitive work atmosphere, whereas others prioritize joint, rather than individual, effort of their employees. While competition at work is paramount for personal growth, I think companies need to encourage teamwork so that their employees can improve their social skills.
The companies that facilitate competition at workplace traditionally cite its value for the personal growth of a personnel. Indeed, some employees are highly motivated to outperform their colleagues, which translates into a mutual benefit since both the employee’s and the company’s interests are satisfied. This also means that companies can better identify potentially gifted employees. Some companies, including the likes of Apple and Microsoft, run contests among the people who work for them with a view to specifically singling out those with outstanding work productivity. Steve Jobs, a late prominent technology think-tank, and his counterpart Bill Gates are salient examples how competition helped boost a company’s progress.
This, however, does not mean that team effort, which I personally place higher than competitive work atmosphere, should be neglected by companies. While performing their duties in a team, workers have a better understanding of their assignments as well as learn to negotiate and socialize within a work framework. This is in addition to the fact that, in most cases, companies built on team effort outsell or outperform their opponents whose reputation is centered on individual contributions. Roy Orbison, for instance, expressed his reluctance to team up with then unknown names Johnny Cash and others. The latter group of people went on to enjoy a brighter career, both as a band and a solo performer, highlighting the superiority of joint work over individualistic and competition-driven input.
In conclusion, although competing with coworkers leads to a certain extent of personal growth, I think that, for the overall success of a company, promoting teamwork is a wiser choice. The history itself has indicated how joint effort has always led companies and other larger organizations to greater accomplishments.
