Finally ditched the Mac.

I get a lot of concerns and questions about the food options in Shanghai. Just a sneak peek into a place that is 5 mins away from the office where I am interning at right now.

This is Uyghur place. Imagine ordering plov in uzbek to Uygur person, even if the language is different, you still understand each other.

Apart from this, there are much more halal and good options around where I live, study and hang out.

Is finance related completely to math ?

It really depends on what you want to do. If Investment Banking, definitely high level math is required. But then Think of it as this Finance is numbers but It is all about money, interesting right?

Every number within financial models have a story to be backed up, be it rates, projections, discounts or premiums. All of them are so much fun.

How is the life in Shanghai as an international student?

It is fulfilling. If you were to tell me that I would be living like this 2 years ago, I would say you are out of your mind.

Quality of life is relatively cheaper to what I think although many people disagree. The food is so diverse and good but not like Uzbekistan for sure. But you are getting more options. Valera when he visited Shanghai said that he can’t relocate from Singapore because he already found that he is rooting there. After the first year, I feel like I am somehow rooting here too, finding new people and opportunities.

how did you get your internship?

Knowing people, showing exceptional approach to the given task and doing more than what is expected.

I was complimented on my approach with the senior associate during the interview.

The way you do it pretending as a senior and what would you expect from the junior to do, that pleases you and the client that helps to execute the deal.

Did u get into uni after a gap year ?

Nope, right after high school —> College.

Gap year if not well-spent is a huge opportunity cost.

It is just 8:40 p.m and I have already lived almost 24.5 hours of my day.

Pushing all the capabilities of Excel and Power point with the music on.

Quote of the day:

Fam!

Just got Middle Market IB internship offer

If you’re coming to college as a business/finance/econ major, don’t buy a Mac.

For sure Mac is a great thing to have but not for financial modeling. It is better to have your hands dirty with Windows.

Buy either Lenova ThinkPad or HP and of course an IPad.

One of the goated databases in the world for Business (WRDS) and it is only through NYU the third to none Business School in the world after Wharton lol.

With this, you can basically access anything both academic and professional research within Business domain.

After finals:

When you are in being the depressed person competition, but your opponent is a NYU Shanghai student after finals.

You are cooked

Finals finished every International:

Coming to a college where student body is 50% chinese is definitely a big step. The tests aren’t made for Internationals, it is made so hard to a level where Chinese student can barely pass and the structure of tests as of what I heard is in so called Chinese style (God know what that means but eventually it means multiple choices are way difficult than short-answers).

When preparing for Microeconomics final midnight, I overheard that people are crying like literally crying for a Pass grade (Grade that is above D).

This semester was definitely the most challenging with the hardest chinese class (Ele2), hardest Programming class here (Intro to Programming), yep you heard it right, Intro is the hardest and it gets slightly better as you move up which in my case there is no move up and Micro was also end of me.

But what I truly learned is that class grades are a competition based, and my mistake was I didn’t even know who the opponent was. I have never prepared for a test so hard and still got humbled by the test. Test is so hard some people tried to copy from me and yet I am the dumbest in the room.

That was some crazy stuff there. Just reflecting on the finals, I noticed that those are made hard to get Internationals actually compete against Chinese or not compete but to a degree get their ass grinded for a better grade.

If you are coming to either NYU Shanghai or Duke Kunshan, I suggest you consult with the kids there and start preparing right now.

Congrats to those who got in:

But it is no good. This is me studying for my final (I have 3) at 10:41 p.m, I think I will be in the library for 4 more hours. And yeah you got it right on the left is coffees and actually it is my 6th cup today and gotta be needing 2-3 during the 4-hour lock-in.

You guys have no idea what you got yourself in. College is challenging, you feel so behind everyday even if you are doing well, especially midterms and finals are the end of you. Just giving you some perspective before you start your academic journey.

You can relax now but I sure can assure you that you are cooked and that is coming from a business major kid (I am actually finance). I took a programming class this semester and it was the end of me. Right now doing some silly calculations to see how I can pass this class.

Okay, enough of me b#tc#ing but I truly wish you good luck.

And to those who got rejected, you have no idea how God saved you. But yeah don’t stop applying if you still want a problem.

For a lil context:

Ivy League valedictorian grad from an ultra wealthy family named Luigi Mangione kills a healthcare Ceo due to past trauma in insurance and health care industry . But I believe the reason is made-up, he just wanted to remake American psycho.

Real Life American psycho

NYU decision will be out in 5 hours, Good luck to those who applied ED 1 to NYU.
