Binging

Binging isn't exactly bad when you do it conscientously and can direct it to endeavours of purpose and utility.

You want to engage in some philosophical epistemeology. Hell yeah, read this. Or go here.

You wanna watch some stem. Click this. It's not about that you binge that matters but what you binge on that matters significantly more.

My point is that it's okay and even highly recommended to pursue one's goals with utmost grit and patience. And that's precisely and probably only what creates substance.

Plugged in links to some favourite resources of mine. Have a nice day, evening!

Snowing like crazy for more than 24 hours at this point. They better have good food at Dining hall after such an effortful commute 😅

Solid blog to follow, chat!

The Next Boom

X has recently released its Grok 3 mini and reasoning for beta.

Some rated it good. Some extremely capable. And some thought those ratings as mere assumptions.

While empirically-pressure-tested-against-benchmarks specs haven't been released, Grok 3 seems quite nice in terms of reasoning at least.

A big reason, I think, being that a lot of X data were fed into it. Like how the whole Reddit was injected into GPT and increasingly more.

Frequent users will have noticed this significant change in the tone and voice of the chatbot.

I am no expert in the field. But the next bubble already has occurred—in a sense. Previous ones being dotcom and estate bubbles.

Then there is PerplexityAI on sides that is trying to grapple (apparently) with Openai. Yet in fact, it just is a wrapper for it. That is, it is sort of like a centralized platform for using different sorts of bots.

But essentially, the competition is getting HUGE, and it's pretty exciting to be living and thriving in this era of progress, especially in machine learning. And we better stay-tuned to not overlook the next wave! So we too can ride on.

On UCAS Unis

Weeks ago, received an email from one of the unis I applied to, saying "thank you for... Masters of Honors in Economics & International Relations.

Though it twice and gpted to verify that it was actually Masters—not an undergrad degree, I then in a blink sent an email to the uni, requesting to amend my program to undergrad.

Hell. Didn't stress it over. Because there were still 4 left. +, that was not my favourite one anyway. Yet again I "trusted but verified" that "Masters of Honors in Inl Re. & Econ" equalled to Actual Masters.

This time, Claude with its emotionless tone said "sry, I flunked, that was actually an undergraduate program but just named "Master of Honors."

Turns out t's a quirk of some UK unis to call their 4-year-program "MaStEr of Honors" Wow. Yep. Yep. You read that right.

All in all, day was saved. Zero damage to my application armor. But, LSE has recently already given me an astronomical amount of health decrease. So let's see what the others will do.

On a side note, though, statistically, UK is the second most generous country to finance the education of intl. students. (US is first) But it's hardly going to give you higher than 50% tuition off—maxxx. Now that's IF. Not guaranteed.

Plus, internationally, most south asian countries would best suit such app process. Uzbek students, oth, not really. PS kids can make it, but even for them, scholarship will likely be low.

The reason is even at mid-schools in India, A-levels are provided, as far from my experience.

Essentially, as someone prepping for US schools, it'll be both easy & hard to navigate the UCAS process. For one, you underwent a relatively challenging process, so another like UCAS would be a no-brainer. For other, it's less technically, and more generally, that YOU DON'T have A-levels LOL and they, if any, give trifle attention to your standardized scores.

Haven't experienced the whole process fully yet---that's so far my experience.

What all this really tells us is that one must "trust but verify". That was a funny experience, ngl. And second, it might be hard for intl. applicants, but parodoxically this very difficulty is also what precisely colorizes the app process & inculcates crucial skills in us.

TL;DR If you applied through Common App already, navigating UCAS will be okay. Even if you stand a little chance of scholarship. But after all, those challenges are what make the process deeply interesting.

The number of intl. ppl applying to through common app in 2024-25.

Can see a clear downtrend in uzbek applications. This could have several reasons, but I believe it's not proportionately higher than the previous year. That is, 2006 could have seen more births or anything of that kind.

But my point stands. There is a definitely clear uptrend in the quality of applications though—or at least that's what I think.

And the recent events easily corroborate my claim. We saw multiple admits to NYUAD today; ivies; and actually even broke barriers deemed impossible before — vandy one esp!

The school is more elitist and thus actually harder to get into than maybe some of the ivies — again my opinion.

I'm very happy for all of those ppl; that their hard work and unwavering faith paid off.

But on a zoom-out, again, this progress speaks something deeper. That we are advancing in admissions, and by extension, country-level determination, and potentially, will have a big—a very big—Central Asian representation!⚡️

We placed in top 10 at world start-up competition.

In regards to our project's potential.

Successfully failed.

Hope for the best and plan for the worst.

This powerful piece applies to literally every facet of life. Sports, education, application.

It captures the essence of the optimal approach—no disappointment in case of plights.

I find it very relatable and relevant, especially these times. So the crunch is give your best, and be ready for the terrible.

Let's rev up the engines for the month and season ahead!

Good luck, everyone!

Hey, any dombit alumni here? If yes, text me at @ziyanoor. It is for important business.

I hope that it's not so late.

Balance. Balance. Balance.

This concept me is hitting me wherever I go. Be it in the essays, rest or studies.

Ideally, you would want to write a narrative-style essay for the most efficiency. It illuminates more about you and has a stronger purpose than other types.

While writing in this style, there are two qualities to keep tight in mind: analysis & flowery. Maybe more accurate is uniqueness, not flowery. Being too analytical makes your essay monotonous, and doesn't show your unique voice. Too much flowery won't allow for adequate reflection.

Other scenario. You just finished wriring your essay, and now it requires editing. However, there is a caveat. Editing is not always good. You want to polish your essay so it flows smoothly and reflects a clear central idea. However, you don't want to pack it with too much details & reflection that your editing becomes counterproductive.

So, what's the takeaway? It's all about finding that subtle line between opposing or seemingly opposing things. I can't exactly elaborate on how. But I can point to where to start: think critically and keep going drastic until you find the last point of feasibility.

Hi, community! It has been some time since I have posted.

I want to do a quick analysis, survey or you name it now: please tell 5 words that first come to your mind about me.

I will appreciate any honest input, and anything negative is absolutely welcome! Send those in either direct message or anonymous bot (http://t.me/questianonbot?start=663370061b).

Thanks,

So essentially, this channel's audience comprises mainly of smart people. Who are also very diligent.

I have been thinking about executing this small project for long. Now that i finally deciced to start it, 10 people can join if they want to.

This is 100% on collective benefit. That is, we will work on books curated by @Valeranotes himself. In the process, we will write reflections, learn about nuances, and review each other's works.

Action plan is ready almost. At the end, there will be a prize for the winner. And we are going to select him/her based on performance throughout the program.

This is especially a booster for students who are aiming to elevate their intellectual vitality. + heavy reading and writing for essays.

Requirements: If you want to join, you will need to commit and have good english. Also, we will do it mostly in the evenings. Around 2 hours of reading everyday.

Here is the list of the books:

Wrote 700+ words, had to chop off half of them.

And this is just the beginning i believe.

question yourself, your surroundings and everything. it is not immoral to give questions; instead, if you had stopped asking questions, that is when i would think you ceased to improve. for search for the truth — or curiousity — is what elevates humans.

processes in this life are vague. how to achieve success? how to be a good person? how to achieve balance? are all processes that are objectively hard to unpack. so what do you do? thats when the act of questioning comes into help.

this method is not just important to operate in society but hugely necessary. like socrates said ''an unexamined life is not worth living".

You might think it too extreme to question everything. But yeah of course it must be within limits of logic and rationale...

With this approach, you may be able to dive into the deepest corners of your mind and see through the littlest subtleties hidden. Its exactly like you are in the matrix, and instead of the usual sceneries, the underlying codes start to appear. So essentially, you are seeing through 4D. Might be an exaggeration lol.

think about time and how it could be divided into different parts — past, present and future.

present is the line between past and future. how thick is it?

past doesnt exist because it has already passed. while future is yet to happen, so it does not exist too.

then present is nothing that is dividing nothingness from nothingness.

right now is present, but also every moment is present...

Does having experience mean you have a mastery of a skill?

wanted to write on this long ago, but this was apparently the destined time for execution.

through reading nietzche and others, i realized that constructing a nuanced argument was always the best as it allowed to you look at the matter through two or more lenses. this then made you the least biased.

what is experience? it is a direct exposure to a type of activity. now i want to be as less biased as possible, thus giving the least inclination to either sides of the matter, that is experience=mastery or no.

does exposure to x imply you gained sth about x, yes and no. the reason is simply participating in a lesson or observation doesnt mean you learned sth from it. deliberate concentration and engagement does. yes yes, exposure can mean a little gain, but it is so little that no impact is made to overall elevation of a person.

take a student for a example who exposes himself to lessons and observations every single day, yet there seems to be no evidence of a trifle growth. and that is because experiencing an event does not mean you fully or sufficiently got the most out of it. if that were the case, then literally every other person you meet would be smart and your ego would shatter into unfixable pieces.

i can derive from this that experience does not necessarily mean master or skilled at a task. it is just correlated with it. and statistically speaking, if i were to ratio the people who effectively capitalized on their experience with those who did not, it would get too small — that is people with no growth would overweigh the other by a huge degree.

with that, i am trying to address the conservative system of employee selection where they first look at the experience YEARS of the worker then at soft and hard core skills.
