🍂The Old Man and the Three Young Men

Once, three strong Young Men lived in a village. They did not do any work at all and just roamed around the village, making fun of people.
One day, the three Young Men were walking on the road. At a farm, they saw an Old Man, with grey hair and a grey beard. They noticed that he was planting some fruit trees.

A Young Man laughed at him and said, Why are you planting those trees?” The second Young Man said, “You are so old now You may not live to eat the fruit.” “Oh Young Men! My trees will give fruits, in some years. Maybe I do not live to eat any of these fruits but many others can enjoy them. This way they will remember me, as, through hard work, I will leave my mark even after I die. But what do you do? How will people remember you?”

The three Young Men understood that the Old Man was right. They knew that they would only be remembered as fools.

Thus, from that day onwards, they started working very hard.

Good deeds are remembered even after death!

🍂The Sportsman and the Spaniel

One day, a Sportsman took his gun and went to the forest, to hunt for birds. His old Spaniel went with him. The Spaniel was an old dog that had good experience in hunting birds.

While spotting birds, the Sportsman saw a beautiful Bird. He, at once, aimed at the Bird. However, right then, he saw a covey of Partridges flying above his head. He became greedy and decided to somehow shoot both the birds.

Then, suddenly, the Sportsman changed his mind and aimed only at the Partridges. The Sportsman was new and inexperienced to the sport. Thus, he was not able to shoot the Partridges. Also, the loud sound of the bullet alarmed the other Bird and it flew

away.

The Sportsman was very sad at his failure.

The Spaniel saw that his master was sad, so, he said,

“Dear master, you should not have aimed at two birds at the same time. If you would not have become greedy,

looking at the Partridge and kept your concentration on the Bird you would have successfully captured it!”

It is important to focus on your goal rather than get distracted with various options.

🍂The Doctor and his Patient

One day, a Patient went to a Doctor complaining of severe stomachache. The Doctor examined the Patient and told him that the cause of his illness was excessive drinking of wine.

The Doctor prescribed the Patient some medicines and asked him to take them, regularly. The Patient took his medicines on time but did not stop drinking wine. As a result, his stomachache did not go away.

Finally, one day, the Patient died.

The Patient was a powerful man. Thus, a large crowd had gathered for his funeral. The Patient’s friends and relatives were crying over his death. The Doctor had also come for the funeral. He said to the relatives, “If only our dear friend had stopped drinking wine, he would have been

alive now Though he took his medications on time, he could not leave his drinking habit.”

One of the relatives of the Patient had been listening to the Doctor. He said, “Doctor, your advice is of no

use now! You should have asked your patient to stop drinking wine while he was alive.”

If the right advice is given at a wrong time then it is of no use.

🍂The Olive Tree and the Fig Tree

In a forest, there were an Olive Tree and a Fig Tree. The Olive Tree was very beautiful. It was very proud of its beauty, therefore it never spoke to the Fig Tree kindly.

One day, the Olive Tree said to the Fig Tree, “I have leaves on me throughout the year. You are not evergreen and do not have leaves on you in the month of autumn. I am prettier than you.”

The Fig Tree never said anything to the Olive Tree and always quietly listened to it. Soon winter came and it started getting cold. One day, it started snowing Big flakes of snow were falling on the ground. The branches of the Olive Tree had lots of leaves; therefore, the snow could not pass through its branches. The snow settled on the Olive Tree. The branches of the Olive Tree could not take the weight of the snow. The branches started falling to the ground one-by-one, spoiling the beauty of the Tree.

The Fig Tree did not have any leaves, so the snow easily passed through its branches and did not injure the Fig Tree.

Just then, he heard a loud neigh. He was even more scared. He looked up and saw a Horse trotting out of the place. He said, “What are you doing in our home? This place is not meant for a small creature like you. Get out of here, soon.”

The Cock then realised that he was inside a stable. He thought, ‘I must find my way out. I feel very lonely, here. These Horses are so different from us!’ The Cock could not ask any Horse about the way out, as they were busy eating their food. The Cock tried to leave, but he almost got trampled. 🦁 Lion and His Fear

There was a lion who feared nothing except the crowing of cocks. A chill would go down his spine whenever he heard a cock crowing. One day he confessed his fear to the elephant, who was greatly amused.

“How can the crowing of a cock hurt you?” he asked the lion. “Think about it!”

Just then a mosquito began circling the elephant’s head, frightening him out of his wits. “If it gets into my ear I’m doomed!” he shrieked, flailing at the insect with his trunk. Now it was the lion’s turn to feel amused.

Moral: If we could see our fears as others see them we would realize that most of our fears make no sense!

GREEK MAGICAL PAPYRI | #Essential6 Unit 7

The Greek Magical Papyri is a collection of writing about magic. After it was found in the Egyptian desert, it took experts years to decipher it. The text was written in at least three different ancient languages. After many years, experts realized it contained a number of spells that varied greatly in scope.

The most common types of magic in the collection dealt with healing illnesses like pneumonia. Some spells also gave advice for treating people with mental illnesses, such as those who became psychotic. Some spells asked for unusual things, like crocodile dung. But botany was an important part of the magic. Many healing spells gave instructions on how to use herbs and plants that were believed to be therapeutic. For example, in order to cure arthritis, the book says that the magician should build an ornate altar. Then he should mash different types of herbs and place them on top of it. At dusk, he is supposed to say a spell, so the gods would be gratified.

Other parts of the collection describe how to hone one’s psychic abilities and how to give credible descriptions of the future. Often, the book advised people how to use different objects to tell the future, including tea leaves. Also, one part of the book tells what different dreams might mean. It gives advice for using dreams to tell the future.

A small part of the book, however, is more sinister than the rest. It is meant to cause strife and deception. For example, one tells how to give someone warts, while another will make all of the victim’s farm animals die. However, if someone’s farm animals died as a result of a curse, he could ask a magician to perform magic that makes the deceased come back to life.

AMAZING KOMODO DRAGONS | #Essential6 Unit 6

Once, a British gazette had an unusual story. Scientists at a zoo made a discovery about komodo dragons. Komodo dragons are giant lizards that grow up to two and a half meters long. A female lizard at the zoo had babies. However, it had never been around a male lizard in its entire life. After the scientists publicized their discovery, many people thought it was fictitious.

But it was true. It was discovered that female komodo dragons can have babies without the help of their male counterparts. This contradicts what scientists know about how most animals have babies.

In most cases, there are many things that can obstruct this type of reproduction. For example, adult males and females carry different genes needed to make an embryo. If the genes are homogeneous, the babies are weaker and have genetic problems. Over time, the weakened species dies out completely. This makes it necessary for the male to be involved. However, scientists verified that when Komodo babies are born, their genes aren’t the exact same genes as their mother. Also, they are devoid of any genetic problems.

Scientists theorize that Komodo dragons developed the ability because it helps the species fend off extinction. If a volcano erupts, lava can kill all of the komodo dragons on an island. However, as long as one female eludes death, she can prolong the survival of the species. Luckily, Komodo dragons are vigorous swimmers. So the surviving female can plunge into the ocean and swim to another island. When she comes ashore, she can reproduce by herself. Over time, the genes within the population diverge. Then, the sparse population increases. Once again there is a surplus of lizards on one island. Scientists think that this may be how the lizards took over all of the islands in that area.
