Attention truckers and travelers on I-75: The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has officially announced the closure of both northbound and southbound rest areas in Butler County, near Monroe, starting Monday, July 7, 2025, as part of a full-scale modernization project.
Here’s everything you need to know:
Closure Duration:
From July 7, 2025, through summer 2026 – approximately one full year.
Location:
These closures affect both directions of I-75 rest areas located just south of the S.R. 63 exit near Monroe, OH.
What’s Coming:
Complete demolition of the old facilities.
Construction of new, lodge-style buildings.
Larger, modern restrooms with adult changing tables.
Lobby area featuring vending machines and regional tourism info.
Covered outdoor picnic spaces.
New landscaping with Ohio native plants.
Alternatives for Truckers and Drivers:
Southbound traffic: Use rest areas off I-71 near Florence, KY.
Northbound traffic: Nearest option is in Hancock County, just south of Findlay.
NOTE: Additional closures are planned—rest areas in Auglaize County, north of Wapakoneta, are also expected to close in July 2025 for similar upgrades.
Why It Matters:
This project is part of a broader statewide initiative announced by Gov. Mike DeWine in spring 2023, aiming to modernize 36 of Ohio’s 85 highway rest areas. It’s a long-term investment in infrastructure, but will temporarily affect key trucker rest points.
Stay alert, plan alternate stops, and spread the word.
