🎧 Zelenskyy ready to negotiate peace with Russia, sign minerals deal: Trump

💬 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reaffirmed his commitment to peace for Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Now this is according to U.S. President Donald Trump during his address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday evening.
Choi Min-jung has the latest.

The U.S. and Ukraine seem to be on the road to repairing their relationship after last week's spat at the White House.
In his first address to Congress since returning to power, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed willingness to negotiate.

"Earlier today, I received an important letter from President Zelenskyy of Ukraine. The letter reads Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer."

Trump also mentioned that he had engaged in substantial talks with Russia and had received clear indications that they are open to peace.

"We've had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace Wouldn't that be beautiful? It's time to stop this madness. It's time to halt the killing. It's time to end this senseless war."

Trump also acknowledged that Zelenskyy is ready to sign the much-debated minerals deal.
Earlier on Tuesday, Zelenskyy also said Ukraine is ready to sign the deal, which grants the U.S. significant long-term rights to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals, in exchange for security assurances from Washington.
It was left unsigned in last week's contentious meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House.

Zelenskyy expressed regret over his recent clash with Trump.

"We seek constructive cooperation and a true partnership. What happened at the White House instead of our planned negotiations is regrettable. But we must find the strength to move forward, respect one another — as we have always respected America, Europe, and all our partners — and work together to bring peace closer."

The Ukrainian leader said that maintaining a normal, partnership relationship with the U.S. is crucial to ending the war, adding that no one wants an endless war.
Zelenskyy also took to X on Tuesday, saying that he and his team are ready to work under Trump's "strong leadership" for lasting peace.
The remarks from Zelenskyy came hours after President Trump had ordered all military aid to Ukraine to be cut off.

🎧 Zelenskyy calls White House meeting with Trump 'regrettable' after U.S. aid pulled

💬Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is trying to sort things out after his clash with Trump last week, now vowing to "make things right" after Trump announced the pulling of all military aid for Ukraine.
Lee Seung-jae has more.

In a video address on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed regret over his recent clash with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

"We seek constructive cooperation and true partnership.

He also vowed to "make things right," saying Ukraine was ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.
Zelenskyy also took to X on Tuesday, saying that he and his team are ready to work under Trump's "strong leadership" for lasting peace.
The remarks from Zelenskyy come after President Trump ordered all military aid to Ukraine to be cut off, following the White House meeting.
The decision was warmly welcomed by the Kremlin, who said that the U.S. suspending military aid to Ukraine would be the best contribution to peace.
According to Russian media reports on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it's clear that the U.S. has been the main supplier of the Ukraine war, welcoming the decision to cut aid to Ukraine.
He said while the details of the suspension need to be confirmed, it will allow Ukraine to enter into a peace process.
Peskov also voiced optimism that Kyiv will lean towards resolving the situation through peaceful means.

🎧 European leaders discuss peace in Ukraine at London summit

💬 We start in London, where European leaders gathered on Sunday to discuss peace efforts for Ukraine and the broader European continent.
There, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his intention to visit the U.S. again for further talks, following his heated public confrontation with U.S. President Donald Trump last week.
Our Park Kun-woo reports.

European countries are stepping up their efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
During a summit in London on Sunday, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that Europe is a continent at "a crossroads in history."

"This is not a moment for more talk. It's time to act, time to step up and lead and to unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace."

Starmer said during Sunday's summit that EU countries would form a "coalition of the willing" and draft a peace plan that will later be presented to U.S. President Donald Trump.
He also spoke about allowing Ukraine to use UK export finance worth 2-billion U.S. dollars to buy some 5-thousand air defense missiles.
But he also stressed all of these efforts need strong U.S. backing.
European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen spoke about the urgent need to "re-arm Europe."
After the summit, Zelenskyy expressed confidence that his relationship with Trump would continue despite their public spat on Friday.

"I think our relations will continue. From our side we are ready to sign the minerals deal. I honestly think the United States will be ready as well."

The summit between 19 world leaders came just two days after a fiery exchange between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, where Zelenskyy was blamed on live television for not showing enough gratitude for U.S. support.
Zelenskyy was visiting Washington to sign a minerals deal with the U.S. but his visit was cut short.

But Zelenskyy also shared his willingness to visit the U.S. for a further dialogue if he gets invited once again, representing the interests of a country that "heavily depends on support from partners."
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Sunday local time that Zelenskyy needs to "come to his senses and come back to the table in gratitude" to accept the minerals deal while adding it might require new leadership in Ukraine to make that happen.

🎧 Zelenskyy arrives in Washington to sign critical minerals deal with Trump

💬 The Ukrainian president is in Washington to reportedly sign an agreement on rare earth minerals with his American counterpart, that will likely become key to ending the three-year-long brutal war.
But there are concerns as to whether the deal will ensure lasting peace in Ukraine.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Bae Eun-ji has the details.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington late Thursday, to hold a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump where they will likely sign a minerals deal that will allow the U.S. to own a large amount of Ukraine's rare earth mineral deposits.
Trump has been framing the deal as a chance for Kyiv to "pay back" Washington, for aid sent under the Biden administration over the past three years.

"We're going to be actually in there digging, digging our hearts out. And hopefully, you know, we need the rare earth and we have some here, but we don't have enough we're our economy is very strong and we need a lot of things that in some cases we don't have here."

And in the meantime, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also made his way to the White House on Thursday local time, for talks on Ukraine's security.
Starmer positively evaluated Trump's leadership in the Ukraine peace negotiations but stated that history should be on the side of the peacemaker.

"We're focused now on bringing an enduring end to the barbaric war in Ukraine. And that's what we must do now, because it can't be peace that rewards the aggressor. We agree history must be on the side of the peacemaker, not the invader."

Details of the agreement are yet to be made public, but it's widely believed that the agreement does not include security guarantees.
One expert explains the reason why Ukraine is still going ahead with the deal may be because it ensures that there can be some sort of a concrete relationship with the U.S.

"But at the moment, as it stands, this deal is between Kyiv and Washington. So that in itself will please the Ukrainians, and I think that is why they want to go, even if the terms do not look to be particularly financially favorable."

Kyiv estimates that about 5-percent of the world's critical raw materials are in Ukraine including titanium, graphite, lithium, and uranium which could be used to produce weapons, electronics, and other products vital in the modern world.

Another expert says the minerals that Ukraine has will become more and more expensive as the world economy slows down, but says it's very difficult to envision lasting peace with aggressive leaders like Trump or Putin, who only act in a way they think is in their best interests.

"It makes Ukraine the target for imperialist powers. That's what's happening now. Ukraine has resources, but Ukraine doesn't have the military resources to defend them. So as you can imagine, in international relations, this is a very bad place to be in."

🎧 Trump says Zelenskyy wants to visit U.S. this week, to sign 'very big' minerals deal

💬 The U.S. and Ukraine reportedly agree on signing a minerals deal, considered key to ending the prolonged war, while critics call it an exploitation.
Ukraine's leader could visit Washington this week to sign the deal.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Bae Eun-ji has the details.

The United States and Ukraine are reportedly closing in on a critical minerals deal, as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes to end the three-year-long war.
Media reports say, citing an unnamed Ukrainian official, that Ukraine has also reportedly agreed to the terms of the deal with the U.S.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refused to sign an earlier draft of the agreement,. saying he "cannot sell Ukraine."
But Trump told reporters on Tuesday that the Ukrainian leader wants to come to Washington on Friday, to sign the deal.

"I hear that he is coming on Friday. It's a very big deal. It could be a trillion-dollar deal. It could be whatever, but it's rare earths and other things. And look, we're spending hundreds of billions of dollars on Ukraine and Russia fighting a war that should have never, ever happened. That's a war that would have never happened if I were president."

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary under the former Bill Clinton administration Lawrence Summers denounced the deal, pointing out that it's a clear departure from traditional American policies in previous major conflicts.
Speaking to Bloomberg TV on Monday, he compared the minerals deal to the Treaty of Versailles, only it imposes penalties on the victims of aggression, and not on the aggressor.
The Treaty of Versailles is a post-World War One peace treaty signed in 1919, which imposed huge financial and other burdens on Germany.
Meanwhile, other experts have also called the minerals deal "absurd."

"For the United States to try to extract a half trillion dollars in mineral resources from Ukraine after giving Ukraine about 60 billion dollars in aid is an absolute absurdity. Ukrainians have been doing the fighting and dying. All we've done is provide some aid, which is a pittance compared to what we've gotten from them, which is defending Europe against Russian aggression."

Although details of the deal are not yet known, if signed, the agreement is expected to allow the United States to take 50 percent of Ukraine's rare earth mineral deposits, worth 500 billion dollars.
Ukraine is believed to hold substantial reserves of critical minerals including graphite, uranium, titanium, and lithium.

🎧 Trump, Macron agree on sending European peacekeeping troops to Ukraine

💬 Marking three years since the start of the Ukraine war, U.S. President Donald Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Oval Office on Monday, where Trump raised hope of ending the war within the coming weeks.
Our Lee Soo-jin has more.

U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed on the deployment of European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine as part of efforts to end the three-year conflict.
The two heads of state met at the White House on Monday to discuss strategies for a ceasefire as European leaders seek to persuade the Trump administration to maintain its support for Ukraine and the transatlantic alliance.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also scheduled to meet with Trump on Thursday to discuss the deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine.

But the meeting came after the U.S. earlier in the day voted against a United Nations resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
This shift in stance from the previous U.S. administration has raised concerns in Europe.
At the joint press conference, Macron said Europe was prepared to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.

"So we have prepared, particularly with our British partners, 'We are ready to provide security guarantees. It could go as far as, as the president said, sending troops who would observe that peace was properly respected, who would position themselves, not on the frontline, not to enter into the conflict, but to mark their presence as a guarantee.”

Macron also stressed that peace must not mean Ukraine's surrender.
When asked directly about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin was ready to accept European peacekeepers, Trump remained confident.
"Yeah, he will accept that. I've asked him that question. It's time to end this bloodletting and restore peace. And I think we're going to do it. We've had some great conversations, including with Russia.”

He also said that he believed that the war in Ukraine could end "within weeks", adding that that Zelenskyy could visit him at the White House in the next two weeks to sign a minerals deal.
At a summit of European leaders held in Kyiv to mark the third anniversary of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy echoed this, saying that he hopes that the war will be concluded this year, while also stressing the importance of having security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression.

🎧 U.S., Ukraine set to agree minerals deal this week

💬 The U.S. and Ukraine may be on the brink of signing a minerals deal worth 500 billion U.S. dollars.
The announcement comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is reportedly set to visit the U.S. to meet with President Donald Trump.
Lee Seung-jae reports.

The United States and Ukraine are reportedly closing in on signing a critical minerals deal, which is considered key to ending the three-year-long war in Ukraine.
According to AFP, citing a Ukrainian government official, the agreement could be signed as early as Friday.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official said that the two countries agreed on the terms of the minerals deal, with government officials from both sides working on the details.
The official also explained that the draft agreement mentions Ukraine's security guarantees, but does not explicitly include the U.S.'s role in it.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump on Tuesday told reporters that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to come to Washington later this week to sign the minerals deal.
According to multiple sources, Zelenskyy's visit is scheduled for Friday, which coincides with reports of when the minerals deal may be signed.
Trump also stressed the need for peacekeeping troops in Ukraine if a ceasefire agreement is struck, however, Russia has refused to accept any deployment of NATO troops.
Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers under the former Bill Clinton administration slammed the minerals deal, pointing out that it's a clear departure from U.S. action in the past.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV on Monday,.. Summers compared the Trump administration's minerals deal to that of the Treaty of Versailles, only it imposes a large sum of payment to the victims of aggression and not the aggressor.
The Treaty of Versailles is a World War I peace treaty signed in 1919. The Allied powers, including Britain, France, and the United States, who won the war, imposed a huge war reparation on Germany.
The minerals deal, if signed this week, will allow the U.S. to take 50 percent of Ukraine's mineral and natural resources revenues worth 500 billion dollars.
But the deal would include not only revenue from rare earth, but also uranium, lithium, oil, gas, and even some port revenues.
The deal also specifies that U.S. companies must hold 50 percent ownership of Ukraine's rare earth elements deposits.
This would allow the U.S. to receive more than three times what was given to Kyiv for its military and humanitarian support in the past three years.

🎧 UN, U.S. clash over resolution on Ukraine war

💬The UN adopted a Ukraine-led resolution condemning Russia's invasion, with the U.S. voting against it.
However, the UN rejected a U.S.-led resolution that called for an end to the war, without mentioning Russia's aggression.

Monday marked exactly three years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to the ongoing war.
Marking the grim anniversary, Ukraine and the European Union drafted a resolution condemning Russia's full-scale invasion, with 93 UN member nations voting in favor and 18 voting against.
One of the notable countries voting against the Kyiv-led resolution was the United States.
The resolution reaffirms Ukraine's territorial integrity while explicitly naming Russia as the aggressor.

It also calls for Moscow to "immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."
While voting against the Ukraine-led resolution, the U.S. proposed its own resolution on the same day which did not name Russia as the aggressor.
It also noted the "tragic loss of life throughout the Russia-Ukraine conflict" and called for a "swift end to the conflict" and "a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia."
The UN General Assembly did not approve the resolution, while it passed the European-backed Ukrainian resolution.
The contrasting proposals show the tensions that have emerged between Washington and Kyiv with the start of the Trump administration.
The passing of the resolution was a win for Ukraine but with 65 abstentions, the vote shows support for the country in its war against Russia is diminishing. Previous votes in the assembly saw more than 140 nations show support for Kyiv.

🎧 Zelenskyy meets Trump’s Ukraine envoy but press conference canceled

💬 The Ukrainian President met with Trump's U.S. envoy for Ukraine to discuss the ongoing war, though their scheduled joint press conference was called off at Washington's request, amid rising tensions over ending the war.
Choi Min-jung reports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg met in Kyiv on Thursday,. and held what Zelenskyy called a "productive meeting."

Zelenskyy shared on social media that they had a "detailed conversation" about the battlefield situation, the return of Ukrainian prisoners of war, and effective security guarantees, emphasizing the importance of U.S.-Ukraine relations.

However, the meeting did not result in significant breakthroughs in securing U.S. support, as evidenced by the cancellation of a planned joint press conference at the request of the U.S.
What was supposed to be a media event turned into a brief photo opportunity without remarks or questions.

Kellogg’s visit to Kyiv came amid escalating tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Zelenskyy.
On Wednesday, Ukraine rejected U.S. demands for 500 billion U.S. dollars in minerals as repayment for wartime aid, citing inadequate support from Washington and a lack of security guarantees.
Trump's frustration with Zelenskyy is apparent, as he believes Zelenskyy has not taken advantage of the opportunities presented.

"Look, President Trump is obviously very frustrated right now with President Zelenskyy. The fact that that he hasn't come to the table, that he hasn't been willing to take this opportunity that we have offered. I think he eventually will get to that point, and I hope so very quickly."

Additionally, the U.S. is resisting putting the blame on Russia for the war by opposing the inclusion of "Russian aggression" in a G7 joint statement marking the war's third anniversary.
This follows Trump's comments blaming Ukraine for the war and calling Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections.”
He has also proposed inviting Russia back to the G7.

Next week, Trump is set to meet with the leaders of France and the UK to discuss strategies for ending the war in Ukraine and post-war planning.
European nations have so far been left without a clear role in the peace talks.

🎧 U.S., Russia agree to work toward ending Ukraine war, after holding first peace talks without Ukraine

💬 In Saudi Arabia back on Tuesday.
Talks between the top diplomats of the U.S. and Russia on ending the latter's invasion of Ukraine lasted well over four hours.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Bae Eun-ji reports.

Top diplomats of the United States and Russia held talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, marking their first formal meeting aimed at ending the Ukraine war, since it began three years ago.
Following the meeting that lasted around 4 and a half hours, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that he's convinced Russia is willing to engage in a "serious process" of ending the conflict and said this was the first step of a long and difficult journey.

"In order to bring an end to any conflict, there has to be concessions made by all sides."

Rubio's Russian counterpart described the conversation as "useful," but said his country will not accept NATO troops in Ukraine as part of any peace deal.

"We explained today that the presence of troops from NATO countries under a foreign flag, under the flag of the European Union, or under national flags, it does not change anything. This is, of course, unacceptable to us."

The two countries said they agreed to hold more talks , and added they will appoint 'high-level teams' to begin working on a path to ending the war as soon as possible.

Following the talks, Rubio held phone calls with his counterparts from the UK, France, Germany, and Italy in an apparent move to reassure the European countries over concerns that they may have no place in the peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, as Ukraine was not invited to Tuesday's peace talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said negotiations to end the war in Ukraine should not take place "behind the backs of" the parties involved.

"You can talk about anything, but no decision can be made without Ukraine on how to end the war in Ukraine. We were not invited to this meeting – the U.S.-Russia meeting in Saudi Arabia -it was a surprise for us, as well as for many."

In response, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Kyiv's concern about being left out, and almost suggested that Ukraine was to blame for a war that began only after Russia's invasion.

"But today I heard, well, 'we weren't invited.' Well, you've been there for three years. You should have ended it three years. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal."
Trump also hinted that he may meet Russian President Vladimir Putin very soon.
As he walked out of the press conference in Mar-a-Lago, he answered "probably," when asked if he's still expected to meet Putin before the end of this month.

🎧 Putin expresses satisfaction over recent U.S.-Russia talks

💬Russian President Vladimir Putin says he was pleased with the results of the recent U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, while a rift between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is raising concerns of its potential impact on the negotiation talks.
Lee Seung-jae reports.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the outcome of the recent U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, the Russian leader expressed satisfaction, saying that he rates the talks "highly."

"I rate them highly; there are results. They were open to the negotiating process without prejudice and condemnation of what has been done in the past."

When asked about the exclusion of Ukraine from the recent talks in Saudi Arabia, Putin said Ukraine would not be excluded in future talks.

“As for the negotiating process, President Trump told me during our phone call, I can confirm it, that, of course, the U.S. assumes that both Russia and Ukraine will take part in the negotiating process. Nobody is excluding Ukraine from this process. So, there are no reasons for such a reaction to the Russia-U.S. meeting.”

However, a war of words between the leaders of the U.S. and Ukraine is raising concerns of its potential impact on future negotiations.
After the conclusion of the U.S.-Russia talks U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's public approval rating was "down to 4%."

Zelenskyy responded that Trump was living in a "space of disinformation," and expressed hopes that the U.S. leader and his team get a "clearer understanding" of what's really going on in Ukraine.
Ukraine was not the only country left out of the recent negotiation talks.
European countries were also absent, forcing their leaders to hold their own emergency meeting.
The major talking point has been whether or not the European allies of Ukraine should send troops for further assistance.
Germany, Italy, Spain, and Poland expressed reluctance,.. however, the UK said it is prepared to send its forces to Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will visit the U.S. next week, hopeful they too can take part in negotiations to end the Ukraine war.
