IELTS CDI - 19.12.2024

Writing Task 2 exam question:

The only purpose of advertisements is to encourage people to buy more than they actually need.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

This was the topic I got back on December 19th. How would you organize your paragraphs and what would be your stance on this topic?

Speaking OSR qiladigan joyimi?

Some people argue that museums and art galleries should prioritize showcasing the national history and culture of their own countries rather than artworks from other countries around the world.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In a world where cultural exchange and globalization are becoming more and more prominent, some people are convinced that art galleries and museums should focus on exhibiting their own country’s history and culture rather than displaying artworks from all over the world. In my opinion, it is important to have a balanced approach here, to foster both national pride and international appreciation.

Proponents of prioritizing national history and culture solely provide multiple reasons for their stance. When museums and art galleries display only national history and local cultural heritage, they ensure that local traditions, information on historical events and achievements are preserved for future generations. This, in turn, lays a strong ground for a robust national identity and cultural pride among the locals. A good case in point is Japan where majority of cultural institutions mainly focus on local culture and history. In this case, it comes as no surprise that Japan is one of the countries with local history and culture preserved the most.

Nevertheless, despite this argument, there are those who are convinced that cross-cultural exhibitions are a must in museums and art galleries. When exhibition centers feature international artworks and artifacts, they cater to diver audiences with diverse cultural and historical backgrounds. Especially in today’s interconnected world, where countries are dwelt by people of multicultural backgrounds, exhibiting international artworks promote inclusivity as well as cater to the interests of all people within the communities. A good case in point is Austria where museums have already adopted inclusive programs in museums and galleries, aiming to offer engaging experiences for everyone.

To conclude, while it is important for museums and art galleries to primarily focus on national culture and history, in today’s homogeneous world, where people from different cultures interact and coexist, museums must allocate more space for international artworks and exhibits to ensure cultural exchange.

The bar chart gives information about men who either participated in or watched six different sport categories. Overall, it is clear that there is generally more preference for watching sports over participating in them, with fishing being an exception. Of particular note are football and horse riding and racing where gap between watching and participating is considerably wider than that of in other categories.

Football and horse riding (racing) are only two sports where there is a significant gap between viewership and participation. In case of the former, nearly 45% of men are involved in watching, significantly higher in comparison to participation rates which accounts for at around 12.5%. Similar trend is observed for horse riding, where up to 40% of mem watched this sport, which is at a greater level than the participation with 20%.

The gap between viewership and participation in rugby, basketball and badminton is not as wide with watching these sports making up more than taking part in them. While similar 30% of men watched rugby and badminton, this figure is higher in basketball with 37.5% of men involved in viewing. As for participation, basketball and badminton participation rates are higher than that in rugby.

Fishing is the only category of sport which has more participation than watching. Around 50% of men engage in fishing which is significantly higher than the figure for men who watch it (approximately 15%).

Some people think video game industry is not important because it is not profitable.

Do you agree or disagree?

In a world where countries flourish primarily due to innovation, economics and healthcare, some people opine that gaming industry is not as profitable as other sectors for country’s overall development. Although gaming industry is becoming more and more established and increasing its economic surplus, I agree that other sectors are more important and are worth more attention.

There are several reasons why gaming industry is expanding day by day. First, automation has resulted in quicker development of technology that occupied our lives. This technological development has laid a foundation for a number of new industries, including gaming one, to flourish and enlarge. This new form of entertainment has garnered much attention and much passion from individuals who are more and more motivated to invest in and develop it further. Second, gaming industry has become recognized worldwide due to its economic power to generate excessive amounts of money. Countries, knowing this fact, are trying to increase their overall money allocation to this industry in order to improve their overall budget. For example, countries such as China, in addition to their already topping numbers in profits from other sectors, are directing more money in search of more profit.

Despite this powerful and new economic entity, I am still convinced that other sectors are worth more and may generate more monetary resources in case they are appropriately supported. One of these sectors is education – commonly referred to as a ground for further innovation and creativity – is more crucial and vital for societal development. This is because, it covers broader topics and plays an important role in nurturing knowledgeable generations who will definitely contribute to the prosperity of country. Countries such as the USA, China and Canada are investing in education due to its long-term results for a country. Gone are days when countries only focused on short-term results. Now the main focus is a huge step for a long time ahead.

Another important sector is science. Science is a major driver of innovation and a path for secrets of universe. Take an example of the USA which invests much of its yearly income in the development of scientific fields such as astronomy and physics. This comes as no surprise that much of the world’s renowned innovative ideas come from this country; Elon Musk with his Starlink and SpaceX program which are trying to supply global internet communication and taking first steps to colonize Mars, future possible living are for the humanity.

To conclude, even though gaming industry brings about more and more monetary resources for countries these days, it is important to remember that true pillars for state development are education and innovation as well as science. Only through paying adequate attention to these can we expect more development and more flourishment.

Some people believe that playing video games increases violence and ill-mannered behaviour.
Do you agree or disagree?

With the surge in digital technology in the form of computers and gaming industry, it has become increasingly common for people to think that playing computer games has a direct link to increased violent and ill-mannered behaviour among individuals, especially among young children and teenagers. Although video games promote violence and anti-social behaviour to some extent, there are other reasons worth mentioning when it comes to this dramatic shift in misdemeanour and acts of violence.

There are various compelling reasons why some people believe that video games make players violent. First, for the most part video games are created in a manner of promoting story telling based on a gamer preference. Take GTA as an example, where players have total freedom to anything they want; robbing a bank, buying armed weapons, killing innocent civilians, visiting night clubs, beating animals and fighting with the police. When teenagers or younger children play this game, their impressionable minds adapt quickly to this gameplay which could motivate them to act in this manner in real life. Second, most video games have very violent design of characters and acts. For example, Mortal Kombat, where you can execute your opponent through so called “fatality” – a special and bloody way of killing your rival. Taking into consideration the fact that children expose to these sorts of games in a prolonged period, there is more possibility for them to take up these in their real life and manifest them.

Nevertheless, I consider video games as a small particle of general problem. There are other reasons to consider before coming up with a definite result. Violent behaviour is often taken up and shown by people, in this case teenagers and youngsters, who come from impoverished and violent neighbourhoods. Living in such surroundings for a long time makes these young people act in an according way that it becomes a norm for them. Moreover, peer pressure has a big role to play here. Pressurized by their friends and close people, most young children and young adolescents are more prone to show up anti-social behaviour in order to fit into the standards of their social circle. For example, in North America, violent acts and acts against social norms are usually committed by individuals with either traumatic and abuse-full background or who come from violent blocks. In this case, considering video games as a primary reason for any violent activity becomes out of date.

To conclude, although certain games propagate violent and terrifying acts, I firmly believe that they are only one root of one big problem. In my opinion, it is where people come from and how they are treated that decides their overall propensity to any act of violence.

Some people think that eSports should be included into Olympic program while others believe that this sort of sports should not be allowed to be added in Olympic framework.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In a world dominated by digital technology and computers, almost all aspects of human life have changed dramatically, including sports. As a result of this shift, it is now commonly believed by some people that eSports (Gaming Sports) should be incorporated in Olympic agenda. However, there are those who oppose this notion and are convinced that this kind of sport should never be in there. Although eSports have become ubiquitous and follow certain rules as other sports, in my opinion regarding them as Olympic-level sport is indeed unacceptable.

Proponents of inclusion of eSports into the Olympic program cite various reasons for their stance. According to them, when individuals engage in gaming and play certain video games, they train and hone their mental as well as physical skills to a large extent as it is done in traditional sports. Although major part of eSports is connected to mental training, it is still considered as hard work and dedication. For example, when people play FPS (First Person Shooter), they improve their reaction time and thinking ahead, creating a potential map of actions that would happen in the next few minutes. Or, when people play MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), they still work on their decision-making and predicting skills. Given this amount of hard work and requirements, it can be agreeable to compare this sort of sports to any other traditional one and include it to official Olympic games.

Nevertheless, despite these arguments, I contend that eSports are nowhere near any traditional Olympic sports. For one thing, historically sports have always been about physical power, physical prowess and mentality. Even from the time of first Olympic games, sports have been intense and required many skills in addition to physical strength. If eSports are looked from this perspective, it becomes clear that eSports lack necessary standards to be considered as sports, let alone being added to Olympic program. However, there were cases in official Olympic games when dancing was included as a sport type, for example in Paris 2024. However, I am convinced that this was just an act of hype and a plan to allure more viewers.

Moreover, comparing achievements of gaming sportspeople and traditional sportspeople is nothing but stupidity. In traditional sports, sportsmen and sportswomen spend years to achieve perfection in their body and skills. They sacrifice much of their life to this, to achieve success and getting a gold medal. In comparison to this, I do not think it would be fair to give the same recognition to a teenage boy who spent most of his time playing games rather than training hard and pushing his limits. I am firmly convinced that Olympic framework of sports should be kept unchanged, without addition of any other sort of activity.

To conclude, although eSports have become popular and benefit individuals on certain mental and physical levels, I think that it is not worth comparing with other traditional forms of sports as well as being included into Olympic program.

Currently, the country with the most time spent on social media per day is Brazil, with online users spending an average of three hours and 49 minutes on social media each day. In comparison, the daily time spent with social media in the U.S. was just two hours and 16 minutes.

Global social media usage

Currently, the global social network penetration rate is 62.3 percent. Northern Europe had an 81.7 percent social media penetration rate, topping the ranking of global social media usage by region. Eastern and Middle Africa closed the ranking with 10.1 and 9.6 percent usage reach, respectively. People access social media for a variety of reasons. Users like to find funny or entertaining content and enjoy sharing photos and videos with friends, but mainly use social media to stay in touch with current events friends.

Global impact of social media

Social media has a wide-reaching and significant impact on not only online activities but also offline behavior and life in general. During a global online user survey in February 2019, a significant share of respondents stated that social media had increased their access to information, ease of communication, and freedom of expression. On the flip side, respondents also felt that social media had worsened their personal privacy, increased a polarization in politics and heightened everyday distractions.
