TASK 2: Many people aim to achieve a balance between work and other parts of lives, but few people achieve it. What are the causes of the problem? How to overcome it?

There is a view that most people aim to keep a work-life balance, but fail to do so due to several reasons. Although it is usually attributed to different factors such as poor working conditions, prioritizing financial ambitions and dreaming of luxurious life, I think that there are still effective solutions to overcome this issue.

Granted, it is getting difficult to strike a balance between personal life and work due to a stiff competition in the job market. Numerous technological advances notwithstanding, most workplaces are extending working hours and putting more burden on their employees, as a result of which people have to work overtime, leaving their personal lives behind. For example, almost 70% of jobs in my country – Uzbekistan – have yet to put nine-to-five work schedule into action, which means the working layer of society tend to end up spending the better part of their day, say, 10-15 hours in the workplace, thereby getting exhausted and having no energy to spend quality time with their family. As serious as it seems, this problem can be solved with the assistance of the government. Provided that the government enforces laws to set five-day working schemes, or at least, limit working shifts up to 7 or 8 hours per day, people will have sufficient time to allocate in the circle of their relatives or friends.

Beyond working conditions, the inability to manage time effectively often stems from shifting priorities. With much better life standards, most are setting the bar high in search of more material wealth. In other words, people have already forgotten about getting satisfied with what they have. Instead, despite being well-off, they seem to strive to reach the top of the current rat race. Reckless competition with others around, in turn, makes them relentless, the ones who are always thirsty for more financial gain. To fight against this is next-to-impossible unless we re-educate ourselves about how to prioritize true assets in life such as family, relatives, and friends. To make it happen, older generation should teach younger ones, including gen Z and Alpha about the life once they had close to one another, staying more community-oriented and less influenced by social media and technological distractions.

To conclude, while very few individuals are likely to succeed in achieving a balance in their professional and private life due to issues related to working conditions and misplaced priorities, I believe that it is possible to address this issue through government intervention and societal re-education about life’s true values.
