Lately, it has become common to see extravagant wedding ceremonies. This phenomenon can be traced to two prime factors – an increased level of financial wherewithal and the proclivity of individuals to gain prestige. I am firmly convinced that it is a change for the worse.

The principal driver behind the proliferation of lavishly celebrated weddings amongst the public is the betterment in the level of people’s financial state. As people earn increasingly high amount of money, they start to develop new propensities with respect to an array of spendings. In most scenarios, these propensities turn out to be inclinations to celebrate wedding parties extravagantly since they do not seem to be worrisome in terms of undergoing financial deficiency after those ceremonies thanks to betterments in financial conditions. Moreover, striving for recognition could be another factor. In the contemporary era, people have formed new perceptions toward the celebration of weddings. More precisely, they are more inclined than ever to get recognition from others, and they assume that through extravagant and expensive weddings this prestige can be gained.

In evaluating whether it is an advantageous or disadvantageous change, I assert that it is definitely a negative development. The foremost reason is negative impressions that those lavishly celebrated weddings inculcate in others. To be more precise, it is human nature to replicate others in any respect. In the case of extravagant weddings, some also try to organize their wedding ceremonies as lavishly as others. However, not everyone is financially established to hold such ceremonies, and, consequently, these people are compelled to get loans. This situation, in turn, leaves those people in financially negative conditions, engendering the emergence of economic stratifications among societal entities.

In conclusion, two phenomena – enhanced level of financial condition of people and the struggle for prestige – can be seen as the chief drivers of lavish wedding parties. In this regard, I firmly believe that it is a negative development as it may bring about socio-economic cleavages.
