In the arts, minimalism really took off in the post-World War II period, with artists like Frank Stella, Donald Judd and Yves Klein challenging people’s conception of what constitutes ‘art’. Their sparse, abstract works divided critics at the time, and continue to do so today. It is hard to imagine art more minimalist than Klein’s, which often consisted of monochrome paintings or, in the case of his music, a single chord followed by prolonged silence.
