The best way to provide road safety is to introduce more serious punishments for drivers.

There is a view that harsher punishments are the most effective way to ensure road safety. While this approach can increase road safety, I believe there are far better methods to ensure security on roads.
Stricter punishments can serve as a deterrent for potential law breakers. In many countries, drivers often get away with violating traffic rules, even if these violations are of serious nature, such as running a red light and speeding near schools. There could be a noticeable decrease in the number of such violations, if there were more severe punishments, such as community service or even imprisonment. Take my country – Uzbekistan, where such an initiative has been implemented, resulting in a marked drop in traffic-related accidents.
Despite these benefits, introducing serious punishments is not the best approach and instead, other alternatives should be explored. First and foremost, drivers should be offered regular education to constantly update their driving skills. In the majority of countries, skills of drivers are tested only once before they obtain their driver’s license. Naturally, overtime people may slowly lose their ability to operate a vehicle skillfully, which can result in devastating consequences. This can be prevented, if the government provides drivers with training on a regular basis, emphasizing defensive driving and the importance of following traffic laws.
Another effective approach is to improve infrastructure design. Creating roads with clear markings, proper signage, and smooth surfaces can prevent accidents. For example, roundabouts can reduce the severity of collisions compared to traditional intersections. Moreover, designating safe zones for pedestrians and cyclists can contribute to safer roads because cyclists usually have to share the road with motorized vehicles or with pedestrians, which increases the chances of accidents.
In conclusion, severe punishments for drivers can lead to safer roads because they can deter drivers from breaking traffic rules. However, there are more effective ways to achieve road safety, including driver training programs and enhancing road infrastructure.
