There is a view that children who often take part in outdoor activities have a tendency to sharpen their life skills more than that of reading books. I fully agree with this statement for several reasonable factors.

One possible reason has to do with developing communication skills. This is because this feature is considered to be vitally important in one’s life and can only be fostered by spending more time with other children outdoors. From my own experience, for example, I was naturally an introverted person, but I became more sociable and communicative through spending most of my time on pursuing active hobbies – cycling, swimming, and playing hide-and-seek with my friends.

Cooperation is another essential trait that can solely be developed through being outdoors in the circle of many individuals. Since many children tend to be energetic and enthusiastic, they are frequently passionate about going out and playing team games with their friends in order to have some fun and uplift their spirit. These games range from playing ball games to sharing toys.

Last but not least, flexibility is also a significant human characteristic that has a role to play in one’s life. That is, people who are flexible tend to be outgoing and curious, thereby often dealing with important issues more effectively by making rational decisions. Flexible individuals are especially highly valued and appreciated by large business companies where they play an essential part in reaching final decisions.

To conclude, I am still of the firm opinion that life skills can exclusively be acquired by dedicating much of one’s time to active pastimes.

Some people think technology development decreases crime, while others believe it actually encourages crime. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

After several years of vigorous debate about whether technology assists in detecting crime instances or is counter-productive to solve criminal actions, this question remains highly contentious, provoking strongly held but divergent views among people. I, however, personally share the view that technology, for the most part, is of great assistance in monitoring illegal activities.

On the one hand, advances in technology can indeed help criminals commit some sorts of crimes. One of them is hacking, meaning that since the introduction of latest models of smart phones and laptops has resulted in a large number of crimes in recent years, allowing many criminals to readily break the operations of some banks while online transactions were carrying out. These instances have happened owing to the improvements made in technological devices’ fast speed and better function systems.

On the other hand, I believe that technological developments play an essential part in tracing criminal activities. Surveillance cameras are a good case in point, as they accomplish multiple functions simultaneously. That’s why security cameras are widely used these days almost everywhere, ranging from educational establishments, traditional work offices to shopping centers. The reason for this is that robbery and theft are common in these places, yet with the aid of surveillance cameras those illegal actions can be reduced.

Another reason why I am still in favor of using technologies to uncover crimes has to do with radars on roads. This is because these devices are of paramount importance and assistance in regulating traffic flows, speed limits as well as car crashes both on highways and roads. Thus, the presence of cameras on roads can encourage both drivers and pedestrians to abide by or respect the law. To take my capital city Tashkent as an example, the government installed radars almost in every corner of the city to make citizens follow traffic rules otherwise they will have to pay huge fines.

To conclude, even though arguments made for both sides are equally valid, I am still of the opinion that advanced technology aids in identifying various types of crimes – robbery, theft, and violating the traffic law.

The pie charts provide a breakdown of employees according to their genders in three different job sectors in country A and B.

In general, the largest percentages of both male and female workers work in services in both country A and B, while the reverse is true for industry where the smallest proportion of man and woman staff work in country A. In stark contrast, in country B it is agriculture which employs the least share of male and female personnel.

Looking at country A first, 56% and 49% of men and women work in services respectively, whereas the respective figures for industry are 15% and 8%. But in agriculture, there are more female workers than male ones, at 43% and 29%.

As for country B, around three-fifths and half of men and women are employed by services, yet the figures for agriculture are much lower, constituting only 3% of males and 1% of females. Industry, however, hires about a third of men and one in tenth of women as workers.

TASK 2
It is observed that in many countries not enough students are choosing to study science as a subject.
What are the causes? And what will be the effects on society?

Recent statistics reveal that a very small number of students are opting for science related subjects in many nations worldwide. The causes of this tendency vary; however, there will be some negative impacts on society as a whole.

There are some reasonable factors why not many students are choosing to acquire science subjects – biology, chemistry and physics. The principal reason has to do with students’ interests and career options, meaning that some students do not show any interest towards these disciplines or just their future careers do not require basic skills, experiences or approaches of these subjects. Thus, many students would rather pay more of their attention to other essential subjects like learning languages or IT. Poor and traditional teaching methods of science are another major reason why many students are not selecting these modules. As an illustration, both school and university teachers in some countries still tend to use blackboards to explain the theme or written examinations to evaluate their students’ performance rather than more sophisticated and modern ways of delivering interactive classes. This, in turn, results in a decrease in the number of science students.

As far as the negative effects are concerned, a shortage of science students will definitely take a heavy toll in the community. For one, if not many people choose to learn scientific subjects, we will not see any breakthroughs in the field of engineering. This is because engineers are of paramount importance in making groundbreaking discoveries, such as electro cars, fast airplanes, and rockets which will change people’s lives for the better, allowing them to enjoy their lives to the fullest. A further negative implication of this case is associated with the medical field. For example, doctors should have a fair bit of knowledge and hands-on experiences in scientific grounds in order to give proper prescriptions, treat different illnesses, and consult with various patients. They can only gain these qualities by studying science subjects at educational institutions. If there are not a sufficient number of physicians, many individuals will suffer from diverse types of diseases.

To sum up, while there are two main reasons why not an adequate number of students are favoring to study science, the repercussions will include a lack of scientists as well as physicians in the fields of engineering and medicine respectively.

A BAND 6.5 ACCORDING TO GPT

Task 2:
Caring for children is probably the most important job in any society. Because of this, all mothers and fathers should be required to take a course that prepares them to be good parents. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

Child care is of paramount importance in many communities these days. It is therefore argued that both fathers and mothers ought to sign up for special training courses to be ideal parents. While I admit the significance of attending parental courses, I have some valid reasons to believe that it is nothing more than a waste of funds and valuable time.

Admittedly, it can be good to some extent if parents enroll in special courses which prepare them to be perfect folks. This is because parental supervision and guidance play an essential part in fostering good behavioral patterns in children. To achieve this, both parents should possess certain qualities – responsibility, kindness and honesty, to name but a few, which can be acquired with the help of specialists who run special parenthood preparation programs. Parents having those characteristics in their hands, they can be confident in their abilities to rear their children properly. As the saying goes: ‘’they reap what they sow’’.

Nevertheless, I still share the view that taking parenting training courses is not good use of one’s time and money. As an illustration, many people go for parenting classes to gain some hands-on experiences or approaches, but they often fail to realize how much time and money they end up spending on these unnecessary programs. Thus, one should bear in mind that youth parents can learn key skills from their own parents, recalling how they were treated and brought up in the past. Having remembered that, young caregivers can apply the same techniques to their children too.

To sum up, even though I accept the importance of taking up parental educational courses, I am still of the opinion that these child-rearing programs are a waste of parent’s time and budget.

The line graph depicts the rates of different modes of transport users who traveled to a certain nation over a 20-year period, starting from 1989.

Overall, while the proportions of travelers using rail, coach and ferry increased during the period given, the figure for air transport decreased within that time frame. Additionally, though the percentage of tourists utilizing cars rose appreciably before seeing a steep decline in the middle of the period, most tourists used cars for the better part of the period. In stark contrast, the least rate of travelers was observed in the usage of ferries.

Focusing on upward trends first, initially, around 35% of tourists used rail, whereas the figures for coach and ferry were about 10% and 5% respectively. After that, the demand for rail transport grew substantially, surpassing the percentage of car users and reaching an all-time high of virtually 60% in 2009. By stark contrast, the use of coach experienced a noticeable rise to approximately a quarter in the end, whereas the figure for ferry utilization rose moderately to roughly 12% prior to witnessing a slight drop to just under 10% in the year 2009.

Regarding car and airplane usage, while the former started the period with about 48% of travelers, the latter accounted for two-fifths of airplane users. Having been subject to a steep increase to a chart high of just over 60% in 1999, the figure for car use saw a 10-percent fall by 2009. Conversely, airplanes underwent a two-fold decrease in their percentage of passengers from 40% to 20% between 1989 and 2009.

The pie charts provide a breakdown of average household spending on various sectors in two separate years, (2019 and 2020).

In general, even though expenditure on food sector decreased noticeably, families still spent a large proportion of their funds on this in both years studied. Additionally, the percentages of spending on healthcare as well as other products and services rose during the period given, whereas the figures for education and housing dropped at that time frame.

In the year 2019 alone, households expended more than half of their income on food – the largest spending on the entire chart. Meanwhile, housing and education ranked second and third respectively, in which families spent a fifth and more than one in tenth of their money on them. The least shares of savings, in contrast, went on other products and services, and healthcare, at 7% and 5%.

By 2020, however, average household spending had changed appreciably. Although the rate of spending on food saw a 14-percent fall, it had still managed to keep its dominance. In the meantime, while the percentages of allocating funds to healthcare along with other products and services witnessed slight rises to 20% and 19% in turn, the figure for housing decreased minimally to 19%. Conversely, the smallest ratio of money was spent on education, at a mere 2%.

The two pie charts provide a breakdown of receiving news from various sources in two different nations, such as Canada and Australia. The units are measured in percentages.

Overall, both Canadians and Australians obtain the largest proportions of news from televisions and online platforms, whereas the opposite is true for the category called ‘’non-specified’’. Of particular note is that Canadians get slightly more news by means of printing press and radio than their counterparts.

Focusing on Canada first, TVs are the most popular choices to be informed about news, at 40%. Online sources, meanwhile, rank second with 36%. While printing press and radio account for a total of 14% and 7% in providing people with news, the figure for a non-specified sector comprises a tiny 3%.

Regarding Australia, social media platforms are the primary sources from which more than half of individuals receive news reports. Televisions, however, are placed second with 37%. Conversely, printing press makes up a 7% of supplying news, yet the figures for radio and the non-specified sector are 2% each.

The first chart provides data on the number of train travelers over a 9-year period, starting from 2000, whereas the second chart demonstrates the proportion of trains running on time and on standard line over the same period given.

Overall, it is clear from the former graph that the number of train passengers fluctuated mildly throughout the period studied. As for the latter graph, while the percentage of trains running on time generally increased over the span covered, that for the standard line remained stable within that timeframe.

Looking at the first graph, initially, the number of train commuters was just below 40 billion, thereafter which the figure started to increase, fluctuating at around between 50 and 40 billions of passengers from 2001 till 2008 before finishing at about 45 billion.

Regarding the second graph, the proportion of punctual trains was 92% at the beginning, whilst the figure for standard line was a bit higher, at 95%. After that, the former saw a noticeable rise to 96% in the middle of the period prior to nose-diving to 92% in 2006 and again increasing steeply to 97% at the end. On the contrary, the figure for the latter stabilized at 95% during the whole period studied.
