Welcome to Cornell, Timur!Having studied at Tashkent Presidential School and UWC East Africa, Timur Polyakov will pursue Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell on a $387,000 scholarship.
With a 43 grade on IB and 1560 on the SAT, Timur was admitted to the Freshman Scholars program led by a Babson student, Sanjar Umar.
📚During the program, Timur reflected on the works of Marcus Aurelius and C. Wright Mills in weekly seminars while receiving in-depth admissions and essay support from Sanjar and Yale-NUS graduate Mishael Ayub.
Tech was one of Timur’s passions as he led robotics school clubs, participated in olympiads, and taught dozens of kids to build and code. He also headed his school’s sustainability projects, helping fundraise to install solar panels and collaborating on a 5-year plan with 17 other UWC schools.
Finally, outdoor pursuits were important to Timur. At UWC, he learned to cycle and taught many others, leading regular cycling trips across Tanzania. Aside from cycling, he even scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing mountain.

Commenting on his experience at Freshman, Timur states:“During the Scholars Program, I participated in meetings where I engaged with philosophical and literary texts, drawing connections to my life experiences and gaining insights into the college admissions process.
These discussions, along with writing thousands of words of reflections, helped me refine my ability to articulate my thoughts and craft essays with a unique voice.
Through this process, I not only gained immense support from mentors like Sanjar with my college essays but also deepened my analytical thinking, helping me better understand what I seek in a college and what to prioritize in my application.”🙌At Cornell Engineering, Timur plans to combine STEM, tech, and entrepreneurship, leveraging Cornell’s various departments to launch high-impact projects. We can’t wait to hear of his plans and how he grows in his undergraduate experience. Best of luck, Timur!
