Many people these days use social media to keep in touch with other people and news events.
Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
In recent years, social media platforms have begun to play a crucial role in assisting people to socialise with others and to stay informed of the news. While it is irrefutable that this trend confers remarkable disadvantages to the society as a whole, I believe that the utilisation of social media as a communication tool is more advantageous in several respects compared to the drawbacks.
On the one hand, this state-of-the-art digital technology has brought about some disadvantages that are generally affecting the entire society. One of the most concerning impacts emerging from the use of social media is that face-to-face conversations are getting rarer, which is leading people to become self-confined in their houses. Because this form of conversation is proven to have mental repercussions if people spend less time conversing in offline settings, this will result in mental stress, depression and loneliness. Moreover, people’s daily walking distance is shrinking due to the fact that they are more focused on being indoors so that they can allocate much of their valuable time on social media, which is, in fact, one of the reasons for the increasing levels of obesity. Apart from getting into contact with others, there is a high possibility of misinformation about happenings around the world, since social media messengers are dominated by unauthorised people sending posts to the public.
However, in my opinion, the deleterious influences are outnumbered by the benefits of the social media thanks to several specific factors. Firstly, in the past, people had to go on long journeys in order to visit their relatives and also navigate their way back, and this was time-consuming, but the advent of social media messengers has allowed people to communicate messages to their kin without taking unnecessary trips. Secondly, it has improved the education system by providing students with tools for distance learning, thus enabling children in poverty-stricken areas to gain access to books, recorded lessons and educational materials. Thirdly, fast-paced technological progress and technologies that support instant messaging mean that people are immediately kept aware of news events on a global level, and this facilitates spreading information about threats, incidents and developments across the world.
In conclusion, the trend of people making use of social media to converse and be aware of recent events has brought both upsides and downsides; though, I reiterate that the drawbacks are outweighed by the beneficial aspects.
