A common problem many people face while watching a .mkv or .avi movie is lagging which may occur due to either one of these reasons:
First, if the file is encoded with x265 (HEVC) the quality is too high and compressed to smaller size. They usually are not supported by older devices.
Therefore, try x264 (AVC) formats, since they’re moderately processed with commonly HD quality, and widely supported.
Second reason might be Blu-Ray format with 60fps frequency. The standard motion of most movies is 24fps, meaning frames were artificially inserted if the movie is 60fps, which causes lags and inconsistencies. So avoid watching 60fps movies.

By the way, i want to make a clarification to usual complaints about theater recorded movies.
If a movie is not aired on streaming services yet, the pirated copies are in TS format, recorded with a camera in theater with poor quality and audience noise in background.
If you’re patient enough, wait for Web-DL, web-rip or HD-rip. These versions are above 720p and ripped or downloaded directly from OTT (streaming platforms) like Netflix, hulu, apple tv etc.
