"Politics and the English Language" is an essay by George Orwell, published in 1946, where he critiques the poor quality of written English in political discourse. He argues that political language often relies on euphemism, vague expressions, and misleading terminology, which can distort meaning and manipulate public perception.

People are increasingly consuming organic food.

Why has this trend emerged?
Do you think organic food is worth the higher price?

The consumption of organically grown food has increased during these days, mainly because of a health-conscious and environmentally aware population. However, I do not think the high cost of organic food is justified due to its limited accessibility to low-income households and less accurate evidence about its health benefits compared to traditionally grown produce.

The claimed health benefits of natural food can be the prime reason for its growing popularity. Many argue that this type of food contains more nutritional substances and provides less exposure to pesticide residues, which can pose threats to overall health. Apart from its health benefits, more and more people are consuming natural food due to more environmentally friendly farming practices. During this production process, there is no use of any chemicals that can promote soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation. As a result, people with a desire to shift towards more sustainable food sources often prefer to consume organic products. Additionally, the Internet is also encouraging this trend to grow more quickly by raising the awareness of people about the health and ecological benefits of organic produce.

However, in my opinion, organic foods do not have any special advantages for the justification of their high prices. While this kind of product can have more benefits than traditional ones, families with low incomes may not have access to the frequent consumption of natural food, which might further highlight the gap between the rich and the poor. Additionally, despite some studies showing the negative effects of pesticide residues in conventionally produced foods, their effects are often not serious enough to opt for higher-priced organic products. Another issue is that the nutritional differences between organic and traditional food are not yet proven to be significant, a factor that means people might just be wasting money by purchasing the former at high costs with just a limited number of gained benefits.

In conclusion, the main reasons for this development can be the shift in individuals’ mindsets towards their health and ecology, encouraging them to consume more organic food as a way to gain health advantages and for the protection of the environment. While there may be some positive health impacts of food grown without the use of any chemicals, I do not believe that they are enough to compensate for significantly higher prices.

There are more and more parents working full time. Some argue that childcare centers are the best in taking care of young children. Others think grandparents are better carers.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Many parents in today's competitive world lead hectic lifestyles and work full-time jobs, leaving their children under the care of others. As a result, there is a debate over who is more suitable to look after children, with some people saying childcare facilities are the best option, while others think grandparents are better alternatives. I believe that leaving children in the hands of grandparents is better for the upbringing of young people.

The advocates of enrolling children in care centers often state the old age of grandparents as a reason for their statement. Babysitting children can indeed be an exhausting activity for grandparents, which can put a strain on their health, and many people also believe that it is unfair to leave young children with their grandparents, who are supposed to relax and enjoy their lives without stress at old age without the possible cries of children. Additionally, kindergartens are also becoming a preparation place for school. For instance, my local kindergartner can be a good example of this, since the place is equipped with computers and a wide range of entertaining educational materials such as picture books to spark the interest of young children in technology and reading. This goes to show that daycare facilities have become preparation for school, rather than mere places that look after children when their parents are working.

In my opinion, the care and love given by grandparents are better for children’s growth. While care centers can be good for young people’s education, people also often forget that children need love and care from their families to grow into emotionally stable adults without any childhood traumas such as neglect from their relatives. When always left in kindergartens, children may not get enough attention from their family, a situation that is usually not true for young people surrounded by their grandparents, who provide love and attention. Spending a day with relatives can also help young people to know more about their family and the childhood of their parents through hearing stories from their grandparents. This may lead to strengthened bonds among family members.

In conclusion, while childcare centers have become a great help for parents who have full-time employment, children can get more benefits from the care from their grandparents.

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Financial budgeting is essential to reach stability in the future. Therefore, there is a common view that putting aside money should be implemented in one’s budgeting. I believe while saving can be good for the future, it is better sometimes to invest all your money.

Many people struggle financially when they get older, since they did not save up money to cover the expenses after retirement. As a result, seniors often have to work even with limited earning capacity, which would not be necessary had they saved money in their youth. In terms of young people, instead of youthful spontaneity, managing their finances effectively is more prudent for future-proofing.For instance, Warren Buffet, one of the most successful investors, is known for his discipline when it comes to saving money, as instead of spending his earnings, he focuses on living a less extravagant lifestyle. This goes to show that frugality is often a good way to ensure future stability for all people, including young individuals.

In my view, however, there are also some cases where it is more preferable to spend rather than save. For example, in youth, those going to colleges often have to pay a good amount of money for tuition, meaning that if they try to save money, they might have to cut expenses for basic necessities such as food and clothing. Additionally, starting a new business often requires one to allocate all financial resources, leaving no room for saving. Jeff Bezos’s story can be a prime example of cases where taking a risk and investing is better, since he reinvested all of the money from business in the early days for it to grow quickly, eventually building one of the biggest companies, Amazon, in the world.

In conclusion, while accumulating savings and living frugally can be a sign of good financial management, sometimes all one needs to do is risk it all and allocate all money to achieve success.

Students are becoming more and more reliant on the Internet. While the Internet is convenient, it has many negative effects and its use for educational purposes should be restricted.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is a growing concern over the dependence on the Internet in education, with some people suggesting that certain restrictions should be implemented into the use of online resources. While it is true that overuse of the Internet can lead to compromised academic performance in some cases, I believe that its role in a student’s life has already become integral.

Nowadays, there are many technological items being developed and making the learning process easier. ChatGPT, for instance, became popular among students. However, many students have been using this website to do their assignments and write essays in educational institutions. This tendency to copy work without making an effort to learn can lead students to have less knowledge about the subject. For instance, there was a case when all students in my local university made ChatGPT write all of their homework essays in the earlier days of the use of the website. This goes to show that Internet use can be too much in some cases, requiring some restrictions.

In my view, on the other hand, there are some advantages of the Internet in education. The introduction of the Google search engine assisted many students to do research and find information easily. Additionally, the use of online educational sources such as YouTube videos can be helpful when a student needs additional lessons on topics they have not fully understood in class. Therefore, putting restrictions on using the Internet might create problems for those who prefer online learning.

In conclusion, while there are many problems associated with the use of digital resources in one’s academic life, I believe that restricting the utility of the Internet can have disadvantages for students.

not the best but not too bad either)

Around the world, people are now living longer than ever before in the past. Some say an ageing population creates problems for governments. Others believe there are benefits to society having more elderly people.
Do the advantages of this outweigh disadvantages?

Due to advanced technology, healthcare has never been better in this contemporary world, which contributes to the longer life expectancy of people. Some believe that the elderly offer several benefits to society, as they have an integral role in family structures and have a lifetime of experience; however, I think that having a higher share of the aging populace can lead to several problems for the economy of the country and the workplace in this competitive market.

The main advantages of senior citizens are observed in strengthened family bonds. As parents are likely to have a hectic lifestyle, it is often the grandparents who look after the younger members of the family. As a result, many children grow up, looking up to the elderly as role models, which could have a positive impact on their behavior and personality since old people have more wisdom and knowledge, enabling them to give younger people good life advice. Apart from family dynamics, some think that the same insights of seniors should be used in the workplace, as they can help younger workers to learn the job more effectively. For instance, old teachers with years of experience and skills can assist their younger co-workers, teaching them about how to conduct classes and deal with different personalities of students in an effective way.

The difficulties caused by the elderly populace, however, can outweigh the benefits, with the main problem being the financial burden on the governmental capital. Nowadays, it is common to see some people abandoning and putting their old parents in care houses. As a result, the government should allocate money to provide for these aged people in many countries. Additionally, those who are still capable of supporting themselves and working might worsen the unemployment rates, since the younger people struggle to find a job due to a lack of experience and a shortage of vacancies, a situation that could have been mitigated if there were not senior workers in the workplace. Japan can be a prime example of a country that is facing challenges with having a higher proportion of an aged demographic, since there is an excessive burden on pension systems and immense competition in the market, negatively affecting the economy of the nation.

In conclusion, while there are some advantages associated with having older individuals both in family and workplace, the problems of an increasing share of the graying population can easily outweigh any benefits.

The bar graph shows information about the percentage of aging demographics in the UK in 1985 with predictions for 2035.

Overall, there is expected to be a significant increase in every country in the future, with the figure for Wales having the highest figures in both years.

The percentage of old citizens in England was similar to the overall figure for the UK, with both at 15%. However, by 2035, Northern Ireland, which previously showed the lowest figure, is also expected to be at the same level as the former countries, all of them reaching about 23%.

The highest percentage of aged populace was observed in Wales, with the same trend continuing in the future, at about 17% in 1985, followed by an increase of 10% to 27% by 2035. Notably, it is anticipated Scotland will become the second country with the highest share of senior population, rising from approximately 13% to 25%.

Some people believe that young people should choose the jobs that they want, but
other people think they should be more realistic and think more about their future. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

There is a debate over the career path of young individuals, with some people saying it is preferable to pursue one’s ambition relating to work, while others argue that the practicality of the job should be the main priority, meaning people ought to choose wisely, considering the real-life challenges of the market. I believe that since one’s job plays an integral role in general life fulfillment, individuals should pursue a career that is aligned with their interests.

For many people, the main reason for having a job is to make money for a living, making them conclude that the financial aspect should be prioritized when choosing a career. In fact, some jobs, such as painting or singing, are hard to find lucrative for amateurs, so people interested in these fields often give up their dreams and try their luck in other sectors with a higher chance of success. Therefore, it is common to see parents disapprove of their children’s future career paths if the chosen field is not sustainable. According to them, one should consider the realities of today’s increasingly competitive market and the employment prospects of future jobs, encouraging young people to make strategic career choices rather than chasing after their unrealistic dreams.

In my opinion, however, a person’s ambitions and hobbies should be the main factors when it comes to finding a career path for various reasons. One of them is that many people work in the same sector all their lives, with only a few people changing their career paths later. This means that working in a field that is economically beneficial but one that does not align with a person’s interests might create a sense of boredom in one’s life. Conversely, having a desired job can give a person life fulfillment and a sense of purpose, even when there are some economic challenges. Furthermore, people with passion-driven jobs are more likely to work harder since they love what they are doing, potentially making a fortune from their dream careers rather than those who have lucrative jobs they do not like. For instance, J.K. Rowling, the author of the well-known book series, “Harry Potter,” was interested in writing stories from an early age, and, despite years of rejection and struggles, she achieved massive success due to her determination in the pursuit of her dreams. This goes to show that passion-driven jobs are better than the ones people choose because of financial aspects.

In conclusion, financial stability and career prospects are what cause many to pursue jobs they do not primarily want. However, I believe that success—and even life satisfaction—can be achieved in one’s desired career paths if the person does not stop pursuing them after facing economic challenges.

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasize that their products are new in some way.
Why is this? Do you agree it is a positive or negative development?

Due to the advances of technology, there have been improvements in advertisements, with many companies stating the novelty of their products in promotions. This trend is mainly happening to gain a competitive edge over other opponents in the market, and I believe that there are some negative sides associated with this development for consumers.

Nowadays, advertising has become the most popular—and maybe the most effective—way of increasing product sales for many companies, which often compete with each other to show better advertisements. Similarly, showing off the originality of products has also become a marketing strategy. Admittedly, this way of promoting can create a certain appeal for a business and develop brand identity. For instance, because of the innovation of the Vision Pro, Apple attracted more attention and fame, which can potentially affect the income of the company in the long term. In other words, the main reason for the increasing promotions of novelty is a result of a marketing method to stand out from other competitors and improve the sales performance.

However, there are some negative sides to intense emphasis on exhibiting novelty. One of them is that the companies, today, are making new—often more expensive—modules of the same products with some alteration in their features, with the main functions staying the same. For instance, Apple launches new iPhones every few years, only adding some new features, often framing even modest updates as transformative. This can trick many users into purchasing new phones to “keep up to date” and not “miss out” on the new features. Additionally, there might be too much focus on advertising the products, featuring them as new things in the industry, which potentially halts the actual innovations from happening. Take Coca-Cola, a company that is notoriously known for its immense attention on marketing insignificant changes, such as new packaging or branding, rather than actual product innovation.

In conclusion, the originality and novelty shown in advertisements and promotion campaigns have become marketing strategies in order to increase income in the company, and I think that while this method works fairly well for organizations, this can lead to people being manipulated into purchasing goods and prevent the real possible changes from happening.

In recent times, economic growth has helped many become richer, both in developed and
developing countries. However, those in developed countries are not as happy as they were in the
past. Why is this? What can be learned from this?

Over the several past decades, there has been a significant shift in the economic condition of many countries, both developed and developing, with financial growth. While people in both given economies have become more well-off due to this development, it is argued those living in developed nations are not as satisfied as they used to be. I believe that this dissatisfaction is mainly driven by the never-ending human trait of always desiring more, which shows us that financial wealth may not be what makes people happy after all.

The main reasons for higher happiness levels shown by people in developing countries with economic improvement can be that the actual living conditions of these people have improved significantly. While market development only meant higher incomes for individuals in developed nations, this development generally led to many people going out of poverty and joining the middle class. For instance, China has undergone many positive changes in its economy after experiencing market-oriented reforms, with many people being lifted out of poverty and achieving better living standards, ultimately showing a higher level of happiness. Meanwhile, those living in developed countries might have already had a good lifestyle without any big financial problems and, as a result, become just richer through overall financial prosperity. As a common human trait, instead of being happier, most people experienced a desire to further increase their wealth, resulting in dissatisfaction with one’s current condition. Take Japan, for instance, a country that has been improving economically for many years but reportedly has locals stating an increased level of unhappiness, which can be mainly from a demanding work culture and excessive focus on personal wealth.

What can be learned from this phenomenon is that after having their basic needs met and achieving standard living conditions, more money does not necessarily make individuals happier; on the other hand, it leads them to want more. This goes to show that improving the economy should be the main focus of developing nations, a population of which still generally struggles with making ends meet. Meanwhile, countries that already have a comparatively better economy, such as the USA and UK, might want to shift their focus from becoming richer with a wealthier population to other sectors, such as improving education, healthcare, and better working conditions for their people to be happier. As for individuals, after reaching a certain level of wealth, they should be encouraged to stop their pursuit of becoming richer, as their life satisfaction may not always align with their wealth levels.

In conclusion, while economic growth has improved the living conditions of people by helping them become richer in emergent nations, already developed ones have not benefited from this trend in terms of a higher satisfaction of the population. This shows that after achieving a point where a person has financial freedom, further wealth does not usually have a positive impact on their overall satisfaction, oftentimes even making them unhappy.

Studies show that crime rates are lower among those with educational degrees. Therefore, the best way to reduce the crime rate is to educate criminals while they are still in prison. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is shown by studies that lower crime levels are often observed in those with educational qualifications, with some people saying that the best way for a crime reduction is through the education of criminals in prison. While I think that it is a good method, there are also alternatives for the rehabilitation of offenders.

Educating criminals can, in fact, prove to be beneficial to reduce crime. The main causes of people getting into the criminal world are often driven by poverty and desperation, as individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds do not usually have access to education and might be forced to make a living to survive, encouraging them to commit crimes in most cases. For instance, some regions in Africa face this problem, with high crime levels occurring due to intense poverty. If criminals, who are mainly younger people, are given a chance for education with possible acquisition of diplomas, they may be able to get a job to financially support themselves and their family, eventually turning their lives around and integrating into society again.

While educational attainment can have a positive effect on criminals’ behavior, this way of reducing crimes may not be always useful. After getting out of jail, offenders may not want to pursue a career if they still have to go into universities and instead might go back into their old habits. In this case, vocational training and skill development programs can ensure quicker employment possibilities after their jail time. The Halden prison in Norway can be a prime example of this, since this place offers inmates an opportunity to learn various skills such as cooking and carpentry, resulting in the nation having the lowest recidivism rates. This goes to show that even without education studies, inmates can still be rehabilitated through other ways that can reduce the crime rates.

In conclusion, although I believe that providing educational opportunities to criminals can help them become law-abiding citizens of society again, other ways could also be implemented in prisons for offenders to achieve a better lifestyle in the future.

The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. Do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, individuals are working more than they used to, with some even being required to go to the office on weekends, a trend that is being observed in my country, Uzbekistan. However, I believe that instead of overworking employees, their working hours should be reduced.

It is common to see many people whose lives become their jobs in order to make a living, leaving little to no time for their personal lives and disturbing work-life balance. This can lead to many issues not only for individuals but also their families. For instance, parents with six or five working days might not have a lot of quality time with their children on weekends. This lack of interaction between family members can lead to behavioral problems in children, as some of them might lose their self-worth because of a shortage of attention and time allocated to them, with possible acting up to gain attention from their parents. In this case, longer weekends also mean more time spent with family, which is important for the healthy upbringing of the young generation.

Other reasons why people have more days off are associated with mental health problems. Long working days could lead people to overwork, possibly causing burnouts in the long term. This is particularly harmful for companies, as employees with this kind of mental problems can ultimately decrease the overall productivity. Meanwhile, well-rested workers are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs and be more productive at work without being bored and exhausted. For instance, Microsoft Japan conducted a trial where employees worked four days a week with a three-day weekend, and, interestingly, there was a significant increase in productivity. This experiment goes to show that workers can, in fact, be efficient even with reduced working days and still have more time for themselves, creating better work-life balance.

In conclusion, I fully agree with proponents of increased weekends, as in this way, employees have more time for their families and to rest, leading to job satisfaction and work-life integration, in most cases without any productivity losses within the organization.

The diagrams provide information about the use of various transport modes, along with the stated reasons for using a car in Edmonton.

Overall, the car was the most popular type of transportation, followed closely by LRT, while comparatively fewer people chose buses and taxis. In addition, the majority of people use cars to commute to work, conduct business, and take their children to school, while remaining factors, namely shopping and leisure activities, are stated less on the survey.

Just under half of people chose cars as their main mode of transit, whereas the second most popular was LRT, being only 10% lower than the former, at 35%. In contrast, the percentage of people using buses and taxis is significantly lower, with both standing at 10%.

In terms of reasons for people’s car use, more than half of the population in Edmonton state commuting as a main factor, while the figures for business and going to school are slightly lower (45% and 40%, respectively). Notably, only 15% of people go shopping or to past-time activities by car.
