📌 IELTS Writing Task 1 Tip: Varied Sentence Structures

👉 While X grew initially, it leveled off towards the end of the period.

This structure is perfect for describing trends that rise at first but stabilize later.

Example:
"While smartphone sales grew initially, they leveled off towards the end of the period."

✅ Using varied structures like this shows examiners your grammatical range and precision!

Well, lets forget about the DTM, they will not change anyway, learn this structure and use it in your task 1 when you take your exam or while practicing for it.

At some point, DTM is just joking around with some students' results and it has been happening for a long time🫠

Describing Minimal Fluctuations

📚 Useful Sentence Structure for Writing Task 1

To describe slight changes in data, you can use this advanced structure:

“X remained almost unchanged, fluctuating only slightly over the years.”

💡 Example:
The proportion of online shoppers remained almost unchanged, fluctuating only slightly around 20% during the decade.

"There is a writing, the laughing one reads it and cries, the crying one reads it and laughs.

What does the writing say?"

We used to give this riddle to each other back in the day, when we were at school and it felt like a fun to give it to someone and tell the answer if they could not find it.

"These days will pass also pass"

Now I remember it, and it hits different.

I am just saying, you know.

📚 Advanced Sentence Structure for Describing Stability

When writing about trends in English, it’s important to use precise and varied sentence structures. One effective way to describe stability is:

“X did not show pronounced variations, remaining relatively stable throughout the period.”

💡 Example:
The percentage of people employed in the agriculture sector did not show pronounced variations, remaining relatively stable at around 30% throughout the period.

Using 'Plateaued' in Task 1"

🔍 Key Vocabulary for Describing Trends

When describing trends in IELTS Writing Task 1, you might need to explain when a figure stopped growing or remained unchanged. Here's a great structure to use:

👉 The figure for [X] plateaued, showing negligible growth after [year].

✅ Examples:

1. The urban population in Thailand plateaued, showing negligible growth after 1990.

2. The number of international tourists plateaued, showing negligible growth after 2020.

3. Smartphone sales plateaued, showing negligible growth after 2015.

"The reverse was true for..."

📚 What is it?
"The reverse was true for..." is a phrase often used in formal writing to introduce a contrasting idea, trend, or situation. It's particularly useful in IELTS Writing Task 1 when describing graphs, charts, or tables with opposing trends.

✨ Why use it?
It’s concise, formal, and shows a good command of comparative language—something examiners value.

📝 How to use it?

Use it when comparing two groups, categories, or time periods to highlight opposite trends or outcomes.
Place it after describing one part of the data to smoothly transition to its contrasting counterpart.
💡 Examples:
1️⃣ The proportion of male students increased in 2020, while the reverse was true for female students.
2️⃣ The sales of smartphones rose significantly in Q1, but the reverse was true for tablets, which saw a sharp decline.

⚠️ Tip: Make sure the data or ideas you’re comparing are genuinely opposites or contrasts. This phrase won’t work if the trends are unrelated or similar.

Try using this phrase in your practice!

@RS_IELTS

Once again, thank you for taking some to do the survey🤝

And based on the survey, 50% of the respondents have participated in online courses before many of whom were ielts course participants.

The courses were generally a month or two and almost 60% of those who took the course, did it because of the high score of the teachers. (Interestingly, nobody mentioned demo classes🤔)

Two thirds of the participants found the courses as advertised which is really good I guess.

Many people found the courses were worth the money. Dropping out rates were almost 50/50 which I think not that good, I was expecting many people would say they finished the courses till the end. So, many people dropped out because they could not catch up.

Around 50% of the respondents were not satisfied with their results. Again, a bit disappointing.
