“Existence is pain to a Meeseeks!” – Mr. Meeseeks

This quote reflects the plight of the Meeseeks, beings summoned into existence with a single purpose: to fulfill a task and then vanish. Their existence is inherently tied to their utility, and they experience immense suffering if they cannot complete their purpose quickly. The quote symbolizes the emotional and physical toll of living solely for external goals and obligations, without room for intrinsic value or joy.

Philosophical Perspective
1. Existentialism:
The Meeseeks are a commentary on the human condition for those who seek purpose only through external validation. Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre argued that humans must create their own meaning rather than being confined by predefined purposes.
2. Utilitarian View of Life:
The Meeseeks are designed to be tools, devoid of autonomy. This reflects societal tendencies to reduce people to their functions—whether as workers, students, or consumers—ignoring their individuality.

Modern Examples
1. Burnout Culture:
• Employees in high-stress industries (e.g., healthcare, tech) often feel like Meeseeks, existing only to solve problems or hit targets.
• People who overwork themselves to meet deadlines or climb career ladders frequently experience mental and physical pain similar to the Meeseeks’ torment.
2. Hustle Culture:
• Modern society glorifies the “grind,” where individuals tie their worth to constant productivity. For example, entrepreneurs working 100-hour weeks might achieve success but at the cost of their well-being.
• This mirrors how Meeseeks become unstable and desperate when they cannot quickly complete their tasks.
3. Social Roles and Expectations:
• Parents who sacrifice their own well-being entirely for their children’s needs, or students pushed to excel academically at all costs, experience the pressure of being defined solely by a role.
• This reduces individuals to instruments for others’ success, akin to the Meeseeks’ purpose-driven pain.
4. Gig Economy Workers:
• Delivery drivers or freelance workers who are constantly rated and reviewed based on performance often feel reduced to their task, echoing the Meeseeks’ plight.

Psychological Implications
Identity and Purpose:
People who tie their self-worth entirely to achieving external goals often struggle with existential crises when those goals are unachievable or completed. This can lead to anxiety, depression, or burnout.
Learned Helplessness:
The Meeseeks’ growing desperation reflects what happens when people feel trapped in a cycle of unachievable expectations—leading to frustration and loss of self-agency.

Real-World Countermeasures
1. Reevaluating Purpose:
• Finding purpose beyond work or external tasks can reduce existential pain. Hobbies, relationships, and self-reflection help ground people outside their “Meeseeks mode.”
2. Work-Life Balance:
• Setting boundaries in professional and personal life prevents individuals from being consumed by the roles imposed on them. For instance, companies promoting mental health days challenge the idea that productivity defines worth.
3. Intrinsic Motivation:
• Instead of focusing solely on extrinsic goals (money, recognition), pursuing activities that bring intrinsic joy (e.g., creative expression, helping others) provides more sustainable satisfaction.

Takeaway

The Meeseeks’ suffering reminds us of the dangers of defining our existence solely by external expectations or tasks. True fulfillment comes not from completing endless goals but from embracing a balance between purpose, autonomy, and well-being.

3. “Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody’s gonna die. Come watch TV.” – Morty

This quote encapsulates Morty’s acceptance of nihilism after grappling with the overwhelming randomness of existence. Instead of despairing, Morty suggests finding comfort in small pleasures, like watching TV. It highlights the show’s core message: life may lack inherent purpose, but that doesn’t mean it’s devoid of meaning or enjoyment.

Further Elaboration

Philosophical Perspective

This reflects existential nihilism, the belief that life has no predefined purpose or meaning. Philosophers like Albert Camus and Friedrich Nietzsche have explored similar ideas. Camus, for example, argued that humans must embrace the “absurdity” of life and find joy in the struggle itself, much like Morty suggesting to “watch TV” as an act of defiance against existential dread.

Modern Examples
1. Media Consumption as Escapism:
Many people cope with existential questions by immersing themselves in entertainment—whether it’s binge-watching a Netflix series, endlessly scrolling through social media, or playing video games. These activities might not solve life’s big questions but provide a much-needed distraction.
2. Mindfulness and Living in the Moment:
Instead of overthinking life’s purpose, practices like mindfulness encourage living in the now. For instance, enjoying a movie or a meal for its own sake mirrors Morty’s suggestion to find joy in simple, immediate pleasures.
3. Embracing Absurdity in Culture:
Meme culture often thrives on absurdity and randomness, reflecting the same “nothing matters” energy. Humor based on nonsensical or exaggerated situations resonates with people who find comfort in laughing at life’s unpredictability.

Real-World Applications
1. Work-Life Balance:
Some people choose to prioritize their personal happiness over societal expectations, like climbing the corporate ladder. They focus on hobbies or spending time with loved ones, acknowledging that traditional success might not bring fulfillment.
2. Climate Change Awareness:
Movements like “solarpunk” combine existential awareness (that humanity faces an uncertain future) with a focus on small, positive actions rather than despair.

Takeaway

Morty’s quote isn’t just a bleak statement; it’s a reminder that while life may not have an ultimate purpose, finding joy in the little things—like sharing time with loved ones or indulging in hobbies—can still make existence meaningful.

Some people say that the main aim of advertising is to improve the sales of products that people do not really need.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The recent economic growth of most businesses has increasingly been attributed to the employability and efficiency of advertisements. However, a perception has emerged suggesting that the primary aim of advertisements is to generate one-sided profit by merely boosting the sales of marketed products. While I acknowledge that the manipulative nature of advertising supports this reasoning, I cannot deny the critical role ads play in fostering the economic growth of businesses, particularly start-ups.

One significant reason why people perceive advertising campaigns as tools solely aimed at improving sales lies in their often-manipulative nature, which prioritizes overconsumption over functionality. Marketed products are frequently portrayed as symbols of status, public image, and power, encouraging unnecessary spending on items that go beyond fulfilling basic needs. For instance, companies like Apple release new generations of smartphones and accessories with minimal functional upgrades. This practice drives consumers to make unnecessary purchases, often leading to financial strain and perpetuating the cycle of modern consumerism.

Despite the criticisms of advertising for its tempting and manipulative nature, dismissing its importance entirely would be unreasonable. Advertising empowers consumers by providing essential information about the latest product launches and facilitating comparisons with similar offerings from other companies, enabling more informed choices. Additionally, advertisements can drive substantial economic success for businesses by allowing them to carve out a niche and gain a competitive edge over their rivals. For example, by targeting specific demographics and tailoring products to meet the needs of their audience, businesses can achieve higher sales rates. This strategy not only bolsters revenue but also fosters brand loyalty, which becomes a long-term advantage for companies.

In conclusion, although advertising has its drawbacks, its contributions to business growth and consumer empowerment are undeniable.

Read and enjoy.
