The maps illustrate how the area around West Park Secondary School changed between 1950 and 2010.

Overall, the area underwent substantial development over the 60-year period, with educational facilities gradually replacing residential and agricultural areas.

In 1950, the school was located to the east of several houses, with a playground directly to its south. Farmland occupied the southwestern part of the area. By 1980, the houses had been removed and replaced by a car park and a newly constructed science block, adjacent to the main school building. As for the farmland, it was transformed into a sports field, while the playground remained unchanged.

By 2010, the car park had been significantly expanded, occupying the entire western section of the area. Although the main school building and science block remained in the same positions, the sports field was reduced in size and shifted slightly to the southeast. Lastly, the playground was also made smaller and relocated to the southeastern corner of the site.

Many people believe that cycling is a healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transport. However, it is still unpopular in many countries. What are the reasons? What could be done to encourage the use of bicycles among people?

Bicycles are not only eco-friendly but also beneficial for our health, yet they are not used as a regular form of transport in many countries today. This essay will explain the main reasons for the low popularity of cycling and suggest some practical solutions to encourage people to adopt this mode of transport.

First and foremost, bicycles are not regarded as symbols of status by many. This is because successful individuals often drive expensive limousines or premium cars, and others aspire to own similar vehicles, which significantly undermines the appeal of cycling. To address this issue, celebrities should be encouraged to ride bicycles regularly, thereby inspiring others to follow their example. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for instance, is often seen cycling in his leisure time, and thousands of his fans are eager to imitate him. If more public figures switched from cars to bicycles, the general public would be more willing to do the same and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Another key reason is the lack of proper infrastructure in many countries. It is extremely inconvenient to ride a bicycle on roads designed primarily for automobiles. Therefore, government officials should invest in infrastructure by adding dedicated bike lanes, as seen in the Netherlands, where cycling is a popular choice. This initiative is likely to reduce air pollution since many car owners, including myself, would prefer to ride bicycles but are deterred by the lack of convenience and safety. The number of cyclists could increase significantly if authorities prioritized road redevelopment for this purpose.

In conclusion, cycling remains unpopular mainly due to its perceived low status and the absence of suitable infrastructure. The influence of celebrities and government investment in cycling-friendly roads are effective ways to promote this mode of transport.

The table illustrates the projected expenditure for environmental projects focused on sustainable forestry in three regions, namely West Africa, Central America, and South-East Asia, over the next five years. The accompanying pie chart presents the breakdown of expected spending in Year 1.

Overall, the spending is forecast to increase significantly in South-East Asia, whereas both West Africa and Central America are predicted to see a downward trend in funding. In terms of allocation in the first year, salaries will account for the largest proportion of expenditure.

In detail, South-East Asia is projected to receive the highest level of funding, starting at $30 million in Year 1, dipping to $20 million in Year 2, and then surging to $50 million in both Year 4 and Year 5. In contrast, the figure for West Africa is estimated to fall steadily from $10.5 million in the first year to $2.5 million in Year 4, before a modest rise to $3.5 million in the final year. Central America’s budget will decline from $20 million to $5 million by Year 3, remaining unchanged thereafter.

Regarding the Year 1 breakdown, half of the total expenditure is forecast to be allocated to salaries. Set-up costs will, reportedly, make up 30%, while training and office expenses will each represent 10% of the total budget.

Some useful vocab:

Many criminals commit further crimes as soon as they are released from prison. What do you think are the causes of this? What effects will they have on society?

The tendency of reoffending among former prisoners has grown significantly in recent years. This essay will explore the main reasons of recidivism and examine its potential consequences for society.

One of the primary causes why ex-convicts commit crime again is the difficulty they face in securing employment after being released from jail. Most employers are reluctant to hire individuals with a criminal record, which severely limits their opportunities to reintegrate into society. As a result, many have to return to crime as a means of survival. Apart from that, ex-prisoners are often regarded as outcasts regardless of their intentions to lead a lawful life. This social segregation can lead to a sense of hopelessness, making it even harder for them to abandon criminal behavior. If these individuals were offered a second chance and treated with fairness, they might be able to become law-abiding citizens.

Another contributing factor is the environment within prisons, which often facilitates the exchange of criminal experience. For instance, a hacker may come into contact with other criminals who share techniques for committing more sophisticated cyber crimes. Rather than serving as a place for rehabilitation, prison can unintentionally become a training ground for future offenses. In addition, inmates often build strong connections with others who share their background, increasing the likelihood of forming criminal networks after release. The implications of this issue for society are serious since a high rate of recidivism poses a threat to public safety and erodes trust in rehabilitation programs.

In conclusion, the main causes of reoffending are the challenges of finding employment and the negative influence of the prison environment. These factors not only isolate former prisoners from the wider community but also pose a significant threat to public safety.
