Iran is set to change their currency from rial to toman, mostly due to the over the roof inflation rate. The exchange rate will be 1 toman = 10,000 rials.
I think we can tie this back to the uzbek word tuman - the one representing districts. In this context, tuman means (or rather meant) the place where 10,000 people live.
So looking at it this way, the naming of the iranian currency is extremely logical.
P.S. I also heard that in the past, the word lakh was used in our region to represent 100k. This word is extremely widely used in South Asia, especially when referring to money.
