Virtually all aspects of our lives are now dependent on information technology, and these include our home, free time activities and work. Although this can create a few problems, I believe information technology generally has more advantages.
Looking at the disadvantages first, technology dominating our lives can lead people to become over-reliant on it. This means what people are supposed to do themselves will always be carried out by technology, and as a result, people might fail to develop their own necessary skills. For instance, students in my classes usually have AI applications write their essays for them, preventing their own writing skill from developing. In addition, information technology being common has brought about loss of people's privacy. Nowadays some tech-savvy individuals with bad intentions can easily steal people's data online, such as their credit card details, and use it for scamming them. Such people may also hack others' social media accounts and access their private information, their family photos or secrets. Therefore, I admit that using IT in every aspect of our lives comes at a cost.
However, there are many valuable benefits that cannot be ignored. One of them could be better security. Thanks to information technology, we have cameras almost everywhere, including many people's homes, and advanced alarm systems. These can certainly prevent many criminal activities from taking place. Another advantage would be offering more enjoyable leisure activities. We can now access video games with better designs, enjoy watching smart TVs or use sophisticated movie streaming apps. Last but not least, information technology has also made our work far easier. Computers, emails or tablets make it easy to write texts, find information and send it to other colleagues or organizations, so without IT, our work would be far more challenging and time-consuming.
In conclusion, despite the few potential problems, IT dominating our lives offers more benefits. It makes our lives safer, offers more enjoyable activities, and more importantly, guarantees easier work.
