Scientific research should be the responsibility of governments rather than commercial organizations.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
It is proposed that the government be in charge of scientific research, not commercial entities. While this proposal has its own merits, I believe it is more sensible to allow commercial organizations to conduct research in the field of science for prompt results and healthy market competition.
Some support the idea of having the government oversee scientific research for financial and safety reasons. They believe that funding research for scientific inquiry seems more feasible for governments as they wield more resources like money and power than individual companies. This, in their view, would ensure that scientific studies receive the financial backing they need to materialize and translate into real-world results. This point holds water as most individual scientists and even companies, are often forced to terminate their projects due to lack of funding, which is rarely the case with the government. Proponents of state-funded scientific research also raise concerns over commercial enterprises heading scientific projects. They are particularly worried about these companies taking unjustified risks in the name of profit, which might have severe implications for the country, possibly the world as it was the case with COVID-19.
Though somewhat convinced by the points mentioned above, I would still prefer it if scientific research was in the hands of commercial companies. Primarily, this is because, unlike government agencies, private companies deliver swift results seeing as there is less bureaucracy and stifling oversight in the private sector. A salient example would be SpaceX - a privately-held space company that invented and commercialized re-usable rockets in several years – a feat which is yet to be achieved by any government space agency, including NASA. The slow rate of progress is often the product of multi-layered approval processes and inspection present in the public sector. Besides, giving commercial companies free rein to conduct research promotes market competition, which is ultimately to the advantage of the consumer.
In conclusion, admittedly, there is much to be said about having the government control scientific research. However, for the sake of speedy scientific advancements and consumers, commercial enterprises should be entitled to carry out research as much as the government.
