☘️ Agree / Disagree

Q: Nowadays, more and more older people who need employment compete with the younger people for the same jobs. What problems this causes? What are solutions?

💡 Answer:

It is true that there has been increasingly more competition between the young and the old who are in search of the same job. Although there will undoubtedly be some negative consequences of this trend, steps can be taken to mitigate these potential problems.

As more elderly applicants have to compete with the younger ones for a job, several related problems can be anticipated. The main issue is that this will obviously pose more challenges for the young who are struggling to find a place in the labour market. Older people, understandably, are usually given more favourable consideration by recruiters due to their vast experience in comparison with the young generation, which can lead to a shortage of work for younger people, increasing the rates of unemployment. Furthermore, when being unemployed and lacking a stable source of income, people are likely to commit crimes such as robbery to feed themselves and their family. As a result, not only will the citizens’ quality of life diminish, but their safety will also be threatened.

However, there are several actions that governments could take to solve the problems described above. Firstly, decreasing the legal retirement age can alleviate the pressure of competition the young have to take. Secondly, increasing the state pension is also an ideal option for this issue because some retirees who find their pension sufficient for living will not have to return to work. Finally, governments can create more available jobs by attracting international organizations to invest with additional incentives.

In conclusion, various measures can be taken to tackle the problems that are certain to arise as older people are competing with the young for the same job.

🔖 The Wise Investment

In a village, there lived two friends, Tom and Jerry. Tom was not very wise. Jerry possessed good wisdom. One day, the two set out for the market in the nearby village to do some shopping. On reaching the market place, they were delighted to see the items for sale on display, There were sweets, clothes, utensils, toys, birds and pets on sale.

As they moved about, they caught sight of parrots. The two decided to buy some parrots, as they were very fond of birds. They enquired about the price from the seller. The seller said, “These parrots are rupees fifty each, and those others are rupees five thousand each”.

The two friends asked the seller, “Why this difference in the prices? The seller replied,” The ones the cost rupees fifty each are not Wise. They can’t be taught Or trained to do anything. The costlier ones are wise, and can learn many things.”

Tom, who was not very wise, decided to buy ten of the cheaper parrots , while Jerry, the wiser one, decided to buy just one parrot of the costlier variety. Tom said to Jerry, “Don’t be a fool. This one parrot will cost you rupees five thousand, while ten of the cheaper parrots will cost you rupees five hundred only! If you buy the cheaper variety, you will not only have more parrots, but will also save some handsome amount of money!

Jerry listened to Tom patiently and simply smiled, without saying anything. The two, then, made their purchases and left. The next day, Jerry started teaching his parrot. Soon, his parrot, a wise fellow, was well trained. On the other hand, Tom tried hard to teach his parrots, but they would not learn anything. One day, Jerry let his parrot fly away. After a few hours, his parrot, the wise one, returned with the ten parrots of Tom. Tom had lost all his parrots. Jerry had eleven parrots now, whereas Tom was left with none.

📝 THE MORAL: One wise investment is better than ten foolish investments. Wise investments fetch good fortune while unwise investments bring misfortune.

📈 8 Tips for Improving Your Writing Style

To be a better writer, you need to know how to be direct and clear, while also putting your own stamp on your writing. Follow these eight writing tips for improving your style:

1️⃣ Be direct in your writing: Good writing is clear and concise. Lose filler words, like unnecessary adverbs and prepositional phrases, simply take up space and weigh a sentence down. Say exactly what you mean in the most direct way.

2️⃣ Choose your words wisely: There are many ways to write a sentence, and there are different words you can choose to convey the same idea. Always choose the simpler of two words. Use familiar vocabulary instead of lofty words from the English language. Simple words are more direct and easier for all readers to understand. Use a thesaurus if you need a little help finding a replacement or an easier way to say something.

3️⃣ Short sentences are more powerful than long sentences: A story loses steam with wordiness. Short sentences are easier to comprehend, something that readers appreciate. Avoid trying to pack too much into a line. Every sentence should contain one thought or idea.

4️⃣ Write short paragraphs: Keep your paragraphs short and manageable. Each one should consist of sentences that support the same idea. Short paragraphs are easier to digest. They also create a more visually appealing layout on the page. Academic writing often consists of lengthier paragraphs, as they need more information to support each theme. In less formal writing, shorter paragraphs are the norm.

5️⃣ Always use the active voice: Use the active voice and adhere to subject-verb-object sentence structure. It’s the most direct path to making your point. With the active voice, the subject is doing something, which is more exciting than the passive voice, in which something is being done to the subject. The passive voice might be grammatically correct, but it creates long, complex sentences and is a weaker way of presenting information.

6️⃣ Review and edit your work: Proofreading your first draft should be the first step in your editing process before you hand your story over to a professional editor. Tighten your writing, check your word choice and sentence structure, and hone your voice to improve your style.

7️⃣ Use a natural, conversational tone: Your writing style relies on your own, unique voice. Communicate in your comfort zone. In other words, write like you converse. Shape ideas with your original thoughts and voice, and do your best to avoid clichés. Your writing style should reflect your personality.

8️⃣ Read famous authors: Pick up any book by Mark Twain, and you’ll know it’s his writing simply by the tone of the story and the words he uses. Great writers put a stamp on their writing with a signature style. Along with works of fiction, read Strunk and White’s famous style guide The Elements of Style. Learning how other writers create their style. Then do the same with your own writing.

☘️ Line graph

✅ Q:
The graph below gives information about changes in the birth and death in New Zealand between 1901 and 2101. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

💡 Answer:

The line graph shows the historical and predicted trends for the rate of birth and mortality in New Zealand for the period from 1901 through to 2101.

At the start of the review period, the birth rate surpasses the mortality rate. The forecasted data shows that the mortality rate is likely to exceed the birth rate by 2041, at which point, the large gap between the two will level off.

At the beginning of the period, the birth rate started at 20,000, peaking at around 66,000 in 1961, before fluctuating between 50,000 and 65,000 until 2021. It is anticipated to decline to around 45,000 births by 2101 slowly.

In contrast, the mortality rate started at just below 10,000 in 1901 and steadily rose throughout, reaching around 30,000 in 2021. This increase is expected to accelerate between 2021 and 2041 when the number of deaths will surpass the number of births. By 2051 the death rate will stabilize at around 60,000 and decline marginally until the end of the period.

🔖 Last Dream of the Old Oak

There once was an old oak tree that had lived through centuries. He was proud to be called the oldest tree in the world. He often thought how lucky he was to enjoy the beauty of nature for so long while mortals could enjoy it only for a few decades.

The tree looked back at his life and thought about all that he had seen though the ages–the sun, the moon, the seas and all the animals–bright and beautiful.

He had seen famous kings, beautiful queens and lots of fierce wars. But he had a last wish–he wanted to grow taller, touch the clouds, feel the stars, and see the heavens above.

However, when the harsh winter months approached, the tree lost all his leaves and his roots became frail. Then one morning, the oak tree died.

📈 4 Ways to Improve your Score in IELTS Writing Task 2

Many people know they need to improve their writing skills but don’t know how to do it. Here are 4 ways you can boost your score in Writing Task 2:

▶️ Understand the exam:

You must first understand what IELTS Writing Task 2 is, what you are expected to do and how to give the examiners what they want. This is the first stage and one that is often overlooked. There are many online resources, often with conflicting and poor-quality information, so finding a reliable source of information is key.

▶️ Identify your weak areas:

If your car breaks down, you would try and identify which part caused the problem. If you get sick, your doctor will run tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. IELTS Writing Task 2 is the same. We must first identify WHY you are not getting the score you need before we can help you improve. However, be very careful! You wouldn’t ask the average man on the street for medical advice, so make sure you find someone who knows what they are doing and has the expertise to help you with this.

▶️ Fix the problems:

Now that we know what the problems are, we must fix them. If your grammar needs work, fix those issues. If your vocabulary is lacking, work on fixing this issue. Just as a good doctor can help you fix a medical problem, a good IELTS teacher can help you fix your specific issues.

▶️ Practice and get feedback:

Practice alone will not help you. It is an essential part of your preparation, but you must also get feedback on your work if you are really going to improve. You wouldn’t try to teach yourself how to drive without an instructor, would you? Find someone who will give you accurate and helpful feedback on your work. Otherwise, you will not be able to move to the last stage.

☘️ Agree / Disagree

Q: Some people think that the increasing use of computers and mobile phones in communication has negative effects on young people's reading and writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

💡 Answer:

Such technological equipment as mobile phones and computers have acquired their significance in the modern-day communication of the young. Personally, I believe that this has both positive and negative effects on their reading and writing skills.

On the one hand, I agree that excessive reliance on these devices is responsible for the young generation’s poor performance in reading and writing. Firstly, many people have a strong preference for computer software when composing text documents due to its convenient functions. For example, Microsoft Word provides users with the ability to modify or erase a piece of text without effort, simultaneously slowing down the writing speed of the users. In addition, young people who spend much time playing with their phones and computers are likely to have insufficient time for reading activities. Gradually, the lack of practice may impair their reading competence in the long term.

On the other hand, it is also true that the proper use of electronic devices can have a positive effect on reading and writing skills. The Internet has now been made accessible through both mobile phones and computers, allowing young readers to gain knowledge from a wider range of sources. Online English newspapers, as an example, are useful for English learners to enrich their vocabulary. Using computers to write blogs is also a good way to enhance the writing skill. Today, the availability of Internet infrastructure can enable bloggers to update their stories at their convenience. By writing regularly, the writing ability of a person is certain to improve.

In conclusion, it seems to me that the use of electronic equipment items can have both advantages and drawbacks for the reading and writing skills of users, depending on the way they are used.

🔖 Three Little Men in the Wood

Dorothy went to collect strawberries in the forest. On her way, she met three little men in the forest. “We are hungry. Will you share your food?” they asked. Dorothy gave them the bread she was carrying. Impressed by her kindness, the three men gave her a boon each. One said, “You will get prettier every day.” The second said, “You will be very rich.” “You will marry a king,” said the third. Dorothy was very happy. She returned home and told her stepmother what had happened in the forest.

The jealous stepmother sent her ugly daughter with a loaf of bread to the forest. She too met the three men who asked her for food, but she rudely refused to share it with them. Angry, they all cursed her saying that she would get uglier, have two horns on her head and die a miserable death.

Many years passed by and one day, Dorothy met a king passing by. He fell in love with her and married her. He took her away to his kingdom.

The stepmother could not bear this. One night, she killed Dorothy and placed her own daughter on the king’s bed. Before leaving she covered her face so that the king might not see her face. However, the king lifted the cloth and saw the horns.

Meanwhile, the queen had turned into a swan. She was swimming in the palace pond when the king saw her. “Sire, brandish your sword over me,” she bade him. Lo! The king was astonished to see his queen before him. He banished the stepmother and her daughter from his kingdom.

☘️ Advantages / Disadvantages

Q: Accommodation and transport problems are increasing in many large cities. Businesses are encouraged to move to rural areas. Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?

💡 Answer:

The movement of organizations from urban areas to less-developed provinces is a solution to various municipal problems, but we cannot turn a blind eye to the shortcomings of this trend. The essay will clarify both sides of the coin, and demonstrate my view that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

On the one hand, it is absurd to say that an organization can easily move from a major city to the countryside without suffering any losses. A change in terms of position may cost a firm, for example, a reduction in the quality of its workforce. Not every employee is willing to resettle down in a faraway province, and they prefer seeking another career in the metropolis to maintain their current living standards. The enterprise, to handle such risk of brain drain, would have to hire local workers who are normally less competent. The expenses for their prerequisite training courses are significant, but an improvement in their professional performance would still not be guaranteed.

On the other hand, I believe that the advantages of this scenario are more important. Firstly, such relocation of organizations can reduce the population density in the urban areas. As a result, the influx of workers traveling in rush hours which causes traffic congestion would disappear. Secondly, the movement of companies’ headquarters makes way for the construction of more residential areas, so the citizens would no longer have to live in narrow houses and apartments anymore. Finally, factories carry along with them modern production lines to the suburban areas, hence the rural population might have access to such cutting-edge technological advancements, which have been by no means close to them ever.

In conclusion, I believe that governments should encourage companies to move to rural areas because of the mentioned considerable benefits.
