Many famous individuals who had great influence on the development of our world totally dedicated themselves to their work and were not concerned about the work-life balance. While such an attitude may bring remarkable success, I believe people should allocate time to their personal lives to ensure wellbeing and to facilitate healthy relationships with people around them.
Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, and Isaac Newton were some of the many influential people in our history. Their names continue to be renowned today because they contributed to the development of their countries, the world, and science in many different ways. Naturally, to achieve such remarkable results, one has to be fully engaged in their profession. This is true not only for above mentioned individuals, but for many well-known people. However, these people share another common trait: they suffered from depression and poor mental and physical health. The reason for this outcome is the lack of the work-life balance.
Undermining the balance between work and a personal life can indeed be detrimental. Being completely consumed by work negatively affects people’s health, with improper sleep and sedentary lifestyle ruining physical health. The overload of information, in turn, leads to mental fatigue, burnout, and consequently to chronic stress. In the worst-case scenario, people with this form of behavior suffer from heart diseases or obesity. For example, Winston Churchill, who was known for his habit of heavy drinking and smoking, had issues with excessive weight throughout his life.
In addition to these health problems, the absence of work-life balance leads to strained relationships within a family. When people do not spend quality time with family members, or simply do not attend family dinners, it often results in the formation of toxic relationships. Such relationships along with unhealthy lifestyle may later translate into depression and isolation.
In my opinion, people have to prioritize personal wellbeing over work to maintain a balanced life, long term health, and meaningful relationships. By focusing on their mental and physical health, people can become more productive and fulfilled, which leads to better outcomes both professionally and personally.
In conclusion, while sacrificing work-life balance may bring great success, the damage it causes is dramatic. I consider overall wellbeing and healthy relationships to be more important than fame or success.
