In their advertising, many businesses now emphasise that their product is new in some ways.
Why is this the case?
Is this a positive or negative development?
Businesses usually pay attention to various factors while advertising their product. Yet these days, what they always emphasize is the fact that their product has some new features. There are a couple of reasons why this happens, but I personally believe this is a negative development.
Let us first look at the reasons. Firstly, all businesses know that it is novelty that sells products in huge quantities. Customers tend to believe that the newer the product, the better quality it is, so businesses try to take advantage of this belief. In addition, giving a new feature to a product also comes with a price rise. Because businesses cannot sell the same product more expensively for no reason, they just emphasize that the next version has new aspects, so it deserves a higher price. For these two reasons, we now see virtually every advert highlighting that the item being shown is newer.
However, whatever the reasons are, I consider the development in question to be negative. This is firstly because companies are now making only superficial changes to a product just for the sake of advertising and selling better. Furthermore, that tiny change in the quality of the product comes with a massive change in the price. For example, every year, mobile phone manufacturers release a new model, which, despite being only slightly different in features, costs considerably higher than the previous version. Thus, this trend seems negative in that it has a dishonest and exploitative nature.
In conclusion, the main reasons why companies' advertisements stress novelty are that they want to sell more and that they want to charge higher prices. Yet since this feels dishonest and exploitative, I regard this as a negative trend.
