"Substance" (1999)
"It's easy to bring youth back, but what price will humanity pay to achieve this dream?"
I began to watch the films in my "watch list". Last year I had exams so I gathered the films which someone recommended but I didn't watch because of time. And, after exams, I decided to watch them all.
And, it was time to watch "Substance", however, in my humble opinion, this movie was overrated.
"Substance" is a 1999 sci-fi and psychological thriller that explores how humanity’s desire for youth and perfection can lead to its downfall. The film centers on a group of women undergoing experiments with a rejuvenating drug. Initially, the results seem promising, but the negative consequences begin to unravel, revealing the true essence of the film: the dangers that arise when science and technology are pushed beyond their limits.
The Film's Main Purpose
The goal of Substance is to highlight the risks of modern technology and the consequences of our relentless pursuit of perfection. The rejuvenating drug represents the endless possibilities of scientific advancement, but it also brings up moral and ethical concerns. The core message: “How are we using science, and is the price worth it?”
Hidden Themes and True Meaning (in my opinion)
Beneath the surface, Substance explores more than just technological development—it also delves into the danger of losing one's essence. The real "cost" of the drug is not only the physical transformation but also the emotional and social destruction. The film challenges us to reflect on what we sacrifice in the pursuit of perfection.
Strengths of the Film
Deep Themes: The movie addresses complex ethical and scientific issues, making it thought-provoking and insightful.
Dramatic Impact: The film balances life’s light and dark sides, captivating the viewer entirely.
Realistic Depictions: The scenes are very vivid and relatable, adding to the immersion.
Weaknesses
Slow Pace: Some viewers might find the development of the story a bit slow.
Inconsistent Plot: At times, the narrative can become overly complicated and confusing.
Substance is a must-watch for fans of sci-fi and psychological exploration. It’s a film that’ll make you think long after it’s over, as you reflect on the costs of scientific breakthroughs.
Reminder: don't watch if you're eating smth😁
And also, it can affect your psychology.
