For the last couple of days at the AKR-2 training reactor at TU Dresden, we carried out several important exercises. We performed control rod calibration and measured the reactivity of an unknown sample. Throughout the activities, we monitored the radiation levels inside the reactor building, around, and on top of the reactor using gamma and neutron detectors to ensure safety.
Additionally, we did power control by changing the position of a cadmium sample in the main central channel of the reactor core. This exercise helped us understand the effects of different sample placements on reactor behavior.
Earlier, we conducted an approach to criticality exercise. During this, we used various detectors, including fission chambers and BF3 detectors, strategically placed inside and around the reactor. We performed calculations related to reactivity, multiplication factor, and subcritical amplification—crucial for understanding how close the reactor is to criticality and ensuring safe control.
